Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Came down from Sydney because our club was playing some trial games against Canberra in all of the age ranges (from 13s through to 1st grade). Thought we'd support the home club by eating in their bistro for lunch, but it clearly hadn't occurred to them than any visitors might want to do that rather than eat the canteen food, so it wasn't open. I'd pretty much figured that out when the bar person let us know from behind the bar that it was closed: ah well, we just had to go round to the Deakin shops just down the road for lunch.

I've been here many times over the past 5+ years, and NEVER have I seen a schnitzel this small. Disappointed is an understatement.

Pub food, reasonable value but the chef who I believe is named Andrew is a rude a-hole. I believe he has a few drinks which may contribute to his aggressive behaviour as others have also mentioned.

Ordered the Sirloin steak. It was tasteless, full of grissle and did not look like Sirloin. Simply the worst steak meal that I have ever purchased. At least one third of it was inedible. I mentioned my dissatisfaction with the waitress, but no response from the chef.

Friendly service, decent sized portions of enjoyable food that include 'gluten free options'. Bistro area is not larges so sizeable groups may need to enquire as to availability.

Went here for dinner with my friends. It’s a nice pub with a bar and designated outdoor smoking area. My friend ordered the steak medium-rare, because she could only eat it that way. It turned out to be medium-well. She asked the waitress and tried to confirm if it’s medium-rare just like what she ordered. Waitress said, “yeah it is medium-rare.” But then, my another friend went for a second opinion and said it is medium-well. The waitress politely offered her to replace the steak, so she said yes. The moment she walked to the kitchen and told the chef, we could hear from our table that the chef was angry (it’s an open kitchen). At some points, he even called my friend names. We did not want to trigger conflicts, because we understood that this is not fancy dining anyway. The only problem is my friend cannot eat medium-well steak. At the same time, the waitress offered to replace it. Having said that, we have a bad mood by knowing that the chef has such an attitude. It is usually my fave dinner & drinking area in the suburb, but since that happened, I don’t feel like going there anymore.

I come to the restaurant at the club very regularly for lunch. I recommend it strongly. The food is excellent and inexpensive. I usually have the rump steak expertly and quickly cooked by the head chef Andrew. But there is variety in the menu too. The Croatian specialties should not be missed. The pizzas and pastas are good too. The salads are great especially the squid salad. Friendly atmosphere.

The sports club itself is just like any other one. The service is very friendly and they have Reschs beer on tap. The best thing about it is the bistro. They have good food and great specials.

Went to Bistro as we were attending a meeting at the club. Meals very well priced and quite tasty. Good range of bottled wine by the glass. Would definitely go back.

For a club it pulls no punches, the pizza in pretty good, the beer is cold and you don't wait too long, prices are fair and your not paying for the fitout.

Haven't eaten here since it changed hands some time ago, but it is certainly busy on Friday nights when the meat raffle is on. Food tends to be a bit on the expensive side but that doesn't stop people from dining here. Good thing about it is the fact that you can buy wine at the bar and take into the bistro. Good selection of wine and reasonable.

Great little club! Can get a rump steak or a chicken schnitzel for $10.50. Good atmosphere, lovely meal. Would dine here again, next time we are in Canberra!

We had been going to this bistro semi-regularly for a couple of years - every couple of months we'd pop in for dinner, some drinks and raffles. We had our favourite meals - pork chops, garlic and mustard sauce and mashed potato/veg which we had nearly every time. Occasionally I would take a change and get the rib eye which was also very good. The value was exceptional. Then we went there in August and I'd ordered the beef. The piece I got wasn't great. Previously they'd always been good cuts but this time not so much. It happens though so I wasn't too stressed about it. I did tell the girl when she stopped to ask how my meal was that I wasn't eating the steak because it had a large piece of gristle running right through the underside of the steak. She rolled her eyes and walked off. Next thing the chef is at my table, with a raw rib fillet trying to explain the intricacies of meat to me at the table. Despite the fact that I am well aware of what a good piece of rib fillet looks like - I'm a big meat eater and have been buying good steak for a long time - it was something that I neither asked for nor wanted particularly given his rather aggressive nature. He then went to the register, took my money out and dropped it back at my table and walked off. Needless to say I said to my husband that I wouldn't be back. Shame because we did rather enjoy popping in there from time to time but the service has clearly gone a long way downhill and there are plenty of other places for me to go in Canberra where I don't have to put up with sarcastic wait staff or belligerent chefs when I express an opinion on my food that I'm perfectly entitled to do given I'm paying for it!
