Decent but underwhelming food

Yaki boy is perfectly situated above ground with a nice outdoor balcony setting, with views of Braddon. The drinks list and cocktails were definitely above average, with a wide choice and great flavour combos. I had the peach shnapps cocktail and it was amazing. The service was alright but the food was very average. My burger paddy was extremely dry and was flavoured like a meat raffle rissole. And the milk bun was sugary like a Maccas burger. The menu was overly descriptive and the different burgers only varied simple ingredients like tomatoes and lettuce and sauce. At this point it should be build your own burger. Essentially, the dishes had no character. However they were generously portioned for the price and came with yummy beer battered chips. The veggie spring rolls were on par with frozen store bought ones. We also had the octopus balls which were delicious and nicely plated. In summary the vibe and bar is great, but the food needs work. Not worth going twice

I visited for dinner with a few friends on a weeknight and it was quite busy - so bookings are recommended. There is a eclectic mix of italian and japanese food as well as burgers. We had a mix of starters and main each, along with a few jugs of beer - and the total was still only $40/head - so definitely great value for money. The staff are friendly and the service is quick.

it was so incredibly fast. 10/10 service speed. Good food! Takoyaki was delicious and perfect texture, couldn't have been better. Chicken Curry Don was nice and a great sized meal. The crumb on the Chicken was really crunchy and amazing, the curry sauce was delicious but not mind-blowingly amazing like some of the curry places you can find in Japan. My partner had a vegan burger which was delicious but had too much aioli so she had to remove some so it wasn't drowned. I had a cocktail which was fine but I wouldn't get one again. They had Asahi on tap which tastes so much better than Asahi from a can. We were seated on the balcony which had a nice vibe. It started to rain lightly and our table was perfectly covered, but it wouldn't have been fun if the rain came in on even a slight angle.

We approached our visit to Yaki Boi with some enthusiasm as the menu appeared varied and location pretty good. After some awesome fried dumplings for entree the remainder of the meal was pretty average but at a premium price (for the type of food). Cocktails are wildly expensive where you pay about $20 for a $10 cocktail. Service could be vastly improved as it is slow and they make a large number of mistakes.

Great concept, poor execution

Very poor execution. Went for lunch, ordered a range of snacks: tempura, sashimi, dumplings, spring rolls. The tempura was tired and soggy. The prawns in the prawn tempura were dry and tasteless. Not sure how the food is processed, most seems pre-cooked then finished in a deep fryer. Came to the table very quickly. Could not recommend.

Confused and ridiculous

busy but with empty tables, looked great! 7.30pm walked up stairs, got asked if we had booking - responded no, got told restaurant was fully booked but if we could be out in 30 min they could fit us in....hmmm, felt a bit rushed and said thanks no and left. Directly outside restaurant front doors got online, booked table through restaurant website for 8.15pm, went for walk, had glass of wine at another venue, came back, got seated at same table that was empty at 7.30. Then 8.20 the confusion really started...waitperson arrives, takes order and disappears, 45min later, still no water, no wine, no food, second wait person arrives apologises for delay, takes order, 5 min later (nearing 1 hour at table no service) both sets of orders food and wine arrive. Thanks, but one round of each is enough. Food is not great but fine, service not great or fine, would maybe go here again for the people watching but could sit on park bench on street with take away for pretty much same experience.

Terrible service, 3 very unhappy diners, but great food.

The service was absolutely terrible. We were not welcomed or greeted, We found our own table outdoors even though we had booked but we were not approached. Our orders were finally taken with not a smile in sight. We had our entrees which were delicious, I can’t fault the food. My Mum and my boyfriend finally got their mains, but where’s mine. It was sitting up on the kitchen window for 10 minutes. When the girl finally brought my meal over she sat it next to my boyfriends plate and I stated that it was for me and said I’d seen my dinner sitting up there for nearly 10 minutes, she did say sorry. There were three staff on often leaning on the bar having a good old chat to each other, one was very scruffy looking with a baseball cap with sunglasses sitting on top, not really appropriate clothing for a waiter. It certainly wasn’t a busy night so no excuses. We definitely will not be back

The vibe and service was good and the decor is fun. But the food was uninspiring and lacks effort: dumplings were shrivelled and dry, poke bowls were ok but I could make better at home. Won’t go back.

We booked to try something different though first table. Service was fine, we were first there, were greeted and sat outside. They setup a heater next to our table and brought table water and cutlery without being asked. We had ordered the chicken curry and a salmon carbonara. When the food came out we got 2 chicken curries. They realised the error, said they would make the other meal and we could take other curry home if we wanted. We split one curry waiting for the other meal. Salmon came out after we had finished the curry. We split that which tasted nice, about half way my wife pulled a staple out of her mouth that was in her food. I went to speak about it with them. They offered to remake it but we settled for a replacment entree and dessert. They were apologetic and did comp the meal. Food tasted nice and accidents happen but was a mixed experience for us both.

A surprise experience where Japanese fusion meets western appetite. Upstairs at Braddon you'll find a comprehensive menu with a range of easily familiar eating options from pizza to burgers all with a Japanese touch. An easy and enjoyable stopover for lunch or dinner. Tends to have a younger audience and the cocktails appear to be popular.

Very nice food and setting

Lovely elevated location and beautifully decorated with nice food too. Salmon carbonara was great, the chicken katsu style dish with rice and egg very tasty and well topped pizzas. Very happy with the meal, draft beer choice rather limited.

Wonderful. Personally I love this place. Very Good variety of burgers and pizzas. Children friendly meals. Also vegan options. Meats are also certified as Halal certified meats. So caters for different eating requirements, no one is left out.

Not value for money

Really not value for money. Got a salmon bowl and it was 80 rice. Four small paper thin slices of fresh salmon and a bit of salad. Not worth $21. Also their menu doesn't even show rice as an ingredient in the bowl! Though it was keto friendly so disappointed on two fronts. Won't be going there again.

The food is really good here. We sat outside, which was quite nice if noisy (birds!). The Pacific Oysters were tasty, and the carpaccio Kingfish was very good. Sashimi was well done, as was the spring roll. My wife thought the non-alcoholic cocktail was very well done, while my Red Wine Umeshu was really top notch in flavor. For $138 Aussie we had quite a feast, highly recommended.

I was pleasantly surprised, expected a more just Japanese place, don’t get me wrong, I enjoy Japanese food but this night I was after a burger ( I was dragged here by my daughter) Service was great, food was interesting and good , and prices were good . Pity it was so cold or I would have like to sit out side and watched the street. Worth the searching to find the entrance and walking up the stairs.
