Nice atmosphere with attention to detail interior. Liked the lightings and overall design. The food was not significantly different but the price very high compared to the service and everything.

We enjoyed the food, menu was extensive and flexible for both amount of food and cost. The sashimi was very good, and every dish offered. We could have done with a utensil to stir the eggplant, which was hard to do with chopsticks even if...experienced. The only suggestions I would make for improvement are: 1) having just returned from Japan, I found the wait staff a bit abrupt, probably not intentionally, as they were friendly enough, but all seemed rushed and a bit more brusque than we're used to after being for weeks with gentle, genuinely polite and service-oriented folk. Even the sauce was poured quickly and roughly so it splashed and had to be wiped up - how does that save time over doing it right the first time - slowly and calmly? It's not relaxing to feel everyone is in a rush. 2) the background music. Not a fan. Perhaps some gentle classical Japanese music would have aided a sense of relaxation. Again, outside of the horrific tourist areas, we always experienced very laidback sounds where there was music at all. I understand the desire to present as modern and not a cliché, but is it a tapas bar or a more sensuous dining experience? Anyway, we enjoyed the meal.More
My partner and I arrived at raku this evening, admittedly without a booking, to find the restaurant had no availability at the time. The host was extremely unfriendly and unaccommodating, borderline arrogant. Didn’t provide any options other than to sit outside on a cold night...when the venue has no outdoor heaters or enclosed area. Considering Canberra is cold 9 months of the year, I think it would be useful to have a warm outdoor seating area.More
I love a place where they offer a tasting menu... rather than trying to figure out what to have, a tasting menu is a great way to see the best of best and this place does not disappoint. The food was excellent and was a...great Japanese fusion. The service was even better, we were looked after right from the start. Highly recommend the tasting menu and have a try of their best items.More
Having not been out for a while, it was a perfect evening We had the tasting menu, and I can not believe a more comprehensive representation of elegance in food. Service was amazing. Not one dish was meah. They were all stunning. It was not...what was good but what was not amazing.More
Fish overcooked, dish unbalanced. A bit surprised that the execution was so poor for such a highly recommended restaurant.
Extremely good restaurant - certainly support the previous good reviews. Banquet prices look a bit high but there are plenty of cheaper options.
Delicious food, great service and lovely ambience. Highly recommend. Our waitress Nancy was very professional and helpful. We will definitely go back to this restaurant when visiting Canberra again.
Another great dinner at this restaurant. Food was fantastic, and well paced. We ordered the $100 banquet for two. Staff were very good, and it was great to watch the sushi chefs in action.
Eaten here a couple of times and have found the service and food consistently good. Had the $100 set menu and it was amazing. The food was top quality and the whole menu was well balanced. The wine selection was great as was the range...of cocktails. Would highly reccomend this restaurant for a special occasion or just a nice family dinnerMore
Great restaurant, great food, great atmosphere. The location location location for modern Japanese cuisine. Pls book before going as it gets very busy very quickly, but don't worry the service is first class and you will be taken care off. The food portions are fine...dining and therefore best you sample the variety on offer rather than picking one or two dishes. To be honest, I want to try all that is on offer!More
Having been before, our expectations were high and they were exceeded. Top subtle service from the moment we entered. We sat at the bar and thoroughly enjoyed watching the creative plate and meal preparations. Quiet background music. Excellent wine list featuring many ACT wines. We...had the $100 set menu and thought the variety of dishes were superb. Each small course was served with careful explanation. As good or better than anywhere we’ve eaten in Melbourne or Japan. Highly recommend. Very special food and atmosphere. From groups or 4-6, the small private booths offer privacy. We loved observing the chefs at the sushi bar. Great team work and totally warm and professional.More
The food was 5/5, what let it down was the waitress and the timing of each course - each course was a little too close together. We ordered the tasting menu, which gives a nice variety of dishes. The food is presented well, is fresh...and delicious. We will return when next in Canberra.More
Raku is a very hard-working restaurant in the city. It's expensive, and it's popular -- it was jam-packed when we went for lunch mid-week. It's wise to book. This is a place to bring someone if you want to impress them (make sure you order...enough dishes); but it's not a place to relax in peace or linger. Kids? Not really. There's a range of seating so stipulate a preference: ie. counter seating, open seating, and booth seating indoors, bench seating outdoors on the street. The enclosed booths suit a party of four comfortably, and it's quieter and more private if you want to have a conversation, but also quite constricted in space -- awkward to get into and out of, actually, and certainly not for everyone (once you're in it's OK). If you want to watch the masters at work preparing food (scaling and filleting large salmon, for instance) then sit around the counter, or near the work station. The food is divine. Very fresh, perfectly cooked and presented, but choose carefully as the portions tend to be small. I had Canadian scallops, and got three; there were two tempura zucchini flowers. Absolutely gorgeous but I was left hungry, and turned to the plain rice in small bowls to fill up (which didn't quite do the trick). The beef cheeks, and seared teryaki salmon were a slightly better size for those with an appetite. Sesame icecream dessert was heavenly. Wine by the glass ca $14, but at least the size of the pour was OK. Lovely plating, napery and glassware. Service good, but nothing to write home about. The big (huge) letdown was the toilets. 1. Unisex, which I and my companions loathe. 2. Dirty.More
Clean tastes of Japanese food. Good wine list, Food from the grill was particularly delicious- vegetables fish & meat.
