A pleasant return
We ate with friends on a Sunday lunch choosing the à la carte menu ...
Starting with Deco starters, a mixed appetizer with Russian salad, quality cold cuts, and cheeses (excellent) accompanied by compotes and caramelized onions, all accompanied by Fried Pan and Panizza... First ravioli with old-fashioned meat sauce, a very tasty white sauce (cooked with different types of meat)... I who am a ragout cultivator found it really good, delicious and handmade ravioli al plin...
Second strips of veal and artichokes very good...
The very good desserts ... The bunet really reminded me of Grandma's...and at the suggestion of the chef we tasted the pomegranate tiramisu, I must say a pleasant discovery...light cream and pomegranate grains give a pleasant crunch.
At the end of the meal the Origine liqueurs are offered to all guests, excellent ginger one!
Careful service very kind staff and the chef at the end of the meal stops to greet guests....
I congratulate Chef Paolo Ferrua (whom I did not know) but who I must say offers a traditional cuisine, quality and with some innovative notes. We will return

Come back, too...
The relaunch of the Osteria del Castello in Cengio Alto has finally restarted since 1906, a place where home cooking made you feel at home.
After some misfortunes, here it is again with the cuisine led by the new Chef Paolo Ferrua who has been able to revisit the menu while maintaining tradition. The new policy is to restore the tavern to the levels it deserves using organic products and animals from small farms grown in captivity and in the wild.
Saturday night I went back with my family to this restaurant and it felt like going back in time.
The staff ready to welcome you, entering you pass in front of the kitchen where, as once the doors are open (I always thought that the open doors in the kitchens of a restaurant are synonymous with hospitality and serenity), we are accompanied to the table, despite the freezing evening outside, inside you enjoyed all the warmth.
Meanwhile, I would like to specify that the covered are included pan fritto (ancient tradition of this restaurant and the panizza, in addition to the normal bread of course).
We ordered: Piedmontese veal tartare with parmesan flakes and Russian salad as appetizers,
First of all, the borage ravioli stuffed with braised meat seasoned with oil and sage (my daughter brushed them which means they were really delicious), the ravioli of the plin di legro with wild mushrooms and tagliatelle with wild boar sauce (sublime). We did not taste the main courses but we went directly to desserts, tiramisu, bunet and paradise apple cake, coffee prepared as it used to be with mocha and at the end of dinner they offer the tasting of organic liqueurs and spirits.
The menu enjoys other dishes all inviting but that we reserve to taste next time, because yes, there will be a next time. Prices are in line with the location.
Finally a dinner worthy of the place. The attentive and friendly staff, between one course and another have always asked if everything went well, while at the end of dinner the chef went to the table directly, stopping to chat to explain also the news for the future, in short, after many, many years I think it is right to give an opportunity to those who despite everything still have the courage to get involved.
Good luck!!! Continue like this and you will see the results taken, good luck!!!!
See you soon!!!

Osteria di Cengio is a mix of tradition, flavors of the past with a touch of innovation. Excellent mix of appetizers with local cold cuts and cheeses and Russian salad, handmade cappelletti in a broth of 10 and praise, plin ravioli with a very tasty white sauce, mixed boiled meat with sauces and three desserts. Finish with organic artisan liqueurs and bitters. Experience to repeat... Excellent service. BRAVI!

Bad experience, portions to taste, back home hungry!!
Mediocre food and service that leaves something to be desired.
Working dinner, with pre-set menu 35€ + drinks.
Too bad it could have been a nice evening.
Twenty people all with the same idea.

This restaurant is in a beautiful small little village named cengio alto. Been at dinner time in the garden. peacefull place. Had ravioli al plin and their specialty as main course, a sort of meat balls made with liver and sausages cooked in wine over a potato puree. Good food. Great service. Definetly recomended

Hidden away in a tiny and beautiful village, Cengio Alto, in what feels like the middle of nowhere, this humble auberge/restaurant will blow your mind. Arriving quite late, in the middle of the week on a rainy ordinary day, we were delighted and treated to what can only be described as an authentic, warm, made at home from local products extravaganza. We were never given a menu, the dishes just kept on coming whilst a small army of women rolled and pinched ravioli in the kitchen. Everything was just perfectly simple and very very good. The biggest surprise was the bill - and not because it was expensive. Excellent value for money.

Second year. Second time.
This time found about the "laboratorio", licuors or digestives.
Thinking about the third time already.
If could give 10 points would give 15.

on our way to the Riviera from Piedmont... getting late and we getting hungry, we spotted this osteria on tripadvisor. I reserved a table for me and my girlfriend and when we arrived we found a nice, romantic table in a quiet corner, candles and wine... prepared just for us! Nice. By the way: do use a sat-nav since the osteria is not in Cengio, but in the old village on the top of the hill (Cengio Alto). Once you reach the village, the restaurant is easy to find. But you first have to find Cengio Alto...
We were a bit surprised and suspicious as we were the only ones in the osteria...we were told that every day is a bit different... that at lunch that very same day they were full with 60 guests... I obviously didn't miss the opportunity: "see"- I said to my girlfriend - "I have reserved not only a table, but the entire restaurant!"
Food: traditional, local food from south Piedmont with some incursions into Liguria. Above all, all very nice, tasty and in good portions. Good red wine from Piedmont (dolcetto).
As starters we had a ham and salami platter, some Russian salad, stuffed onions, a kind of quiche with cheese and ham, some other vegetables. Don't miss the "pane fritto" ("fried bread") together with the starters.
We had two or three different first courses to choose from: we tried the ravioli with a kind of thick Bolognese sauce: it was very good and very different from the usual Bolognese, with very little tomato sauce.
As a second course we went for rabbit, but my girlfriend wasn't sure she would make it "how can you eat a poor rabbit? I had a rabbit as a pet when I was a child... it's just sad...". No need to say, she didn't need my help to finish it... It was rabbit with olives, a traditional recipe from Liguria we were told.
Dessert: a "mattone" (a sort of chocolate salami with biscuits), coffee and a selection of spirits produced by the osteria (some very peculiar, as for example a fennel infuse or one with juniper).
As at the end of the evening we were both very satisfied and let's say "in a happy spirit" we were also offered a clean and spacious accommodation in the adjacent B&B, that we gatefully accepted.
If you are in the area, don't miss this osteria.

We was here in the middle of july 2014. It´s not easy to find, hidden in a small village behind other houses. You have to ask for the road. If you like flashy places with snobbish waiters - don´t bother. But if you love genuine experiences that you´ll remember for life - go there! This place is for real.
Every italian restaurant is claiming to have "pappa della nonna (grandmas food)" but this place really has it. Everything is biodynamic and comes from the immediate surroundings and is cooked "pre-boom", which means that they serve food as it was made before mass production and distribution destroyed it in the end of the 50´s. They even has a small exhibition of italian things from the 50´s, and the old radio is playing beautiful sentimental Neapolitan songs.
The food is excellent and pure piemontese. We just had a "small" lunch (Merenda Sinoira) with 7 different antipasti, wine, 3 desserts, coffee and homemade licorice liqueur. We raised from the table totally fulfilled. And the price was 15 Euro, all included! The owner is the third generation running this restaurant and is very friendly and hospitable. Ask him about the food, culture of this area and history of the restaurant. We will certainly come back. For dinner this time, so we could eat and drink more.

We have been coming here for Sunday lunch with family for a couple of years now, and were never disappointed. The menu is simple but genuine and very tasty, wines and (self-produced) spirits are excellent, and the prices are definitely reasonable. One would hardly expect such a warm welcome, nice internal decor, and competent service, by looking at the place from the outside. Yet the surroundings are interesting, and the countryside definitely fascinating for children. If you want to have it all for your family - an abundant and delicious meal for adults, a lot of fun for kids - this is the right place to visit. Warmly recommended.
