Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Nice local place, the only one in Exeter, they even run a post office counter inside. Always full of locals who like to chat and place ridiculously detailed orders so everything moves slowly. The coffee's great, hot and creamy with an unusual tang. The food's good quality but often very basic for the high prices. $13.50 for a very thin ham toastie is the most egregious pricing but everything costs more than in Bundanoon because there's no competition.

I visited the Southern Highlands a few weeks ago and when I arrived in the small village of Exeter I went to the Exeter General Store. They have a variety of delicious food, including some good options for vegetarians (which I am). I had the MASH burger and it was one of the best vegetarian burgers I've ever had. The atmosphere is cosy and cute and you can feel the community energy. The coffee is delicious and was my favourite coffee while in the Southern Highlands. I would highly reccomend this spot!

We were passing through Exeter on a Sunday morning and saw the general store. It looked cute and we thought we would stop in for coffee and cake. It is much bigger inside than it looks and there are plenty of tables and chairs both inside and outside. It was quite busy but plenty of staff were on hand to cope with the rush. Our cappuccinos were very nice and we each ordered a cake item which was also most acceptable. Help yourself table water and glasses was available just inside the door and a toilet located just outside. This is a great find in a little country town.

Visited for lunch as hadn’t been before. Busy quaint little cafe.
Food – eggs Benedict very nice, smashed avocado needed balsamic or some sort of dressing. $3.30 for one egg to be added seemed very high.
Smoothies were almost $10 each and not large so felt pretty overpriced.
Overall good to try but too expensive for a repeat.
Staff – the young guy on the counter was very nice as were the other staff.

Hi!
I just wanted to say how disappointed I am with your food.
We came their with our toddler and ordered the kids chicken strips
It was absolutely disgusting and burnt to a crisp!
I wouldn’t have eaten it never mind about her wanting to eat it.
I don’t know how you can expect people to pay $13.5 for that!
My husband and I ordered the chicken tacos and the chicken was cold.
Disgusting food!
Will not be back

I went here for a family lunch today and was absolutely applauded by the owners reaction when my Granddaughter couldn’t eat her hamburger because it was burnt and she said it tasted funny. His opinion was it’s not burnt its pan fried. Funny how 5 of us at the table considered it burnt but because he didn’t that was that and they through it in the bin.
A waste of $10.00.
I then asked for a vegimite and cheese sandwich and he wanted to charge me another $9.00 for that as apparently they have running expenses.
I certainly would not recommend this place and will never return.
I have never found a manager/ owner that wasn’t willing to work with a customer at all on an outcome it was just we have your money there is nothing you can do about it now. Appalling 👎

Hi Karen, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your experience with us today. Given your review, I would like to take the opportunity to comment. When your raised the issue with one of our team members, you said your granddaughter "doesn't like it, she thinks it tastes burnt". We took the burger to our chefs, which they both checked and advised that it was not burnt and was cooked as it should be. One of our team members returned the burger to your table and politely advised this, to which you replied that you didn't want it and would order her a sandwich instead. Our team member then returned the burger to the kitchen and disposed of it per your wishes.
When our team member was taking your order for the sandwich, unfortunately the wrong modifier item was pressed (add leg ham instead of add vegemite) adding $4 instead of no charge. Admittedly she was a little flustered by your approach. I was not aware of this until after you had left without ordering the sandwich, and I did call shortly thereafter and apologised to the contact we had for your booking. I'm sorry that we advised the wrong price on this at the time.
In hindsight we could have handled this better, and I'm sorry we weren't able to meet your needs. However I don't believe it is fair that we should provide a free different menu item to replace a menu item that was correctly prepared because it wasn't to a particular taste.

After reading all the reviews and noticed the store was highly recommended, we decided to take a drive to the southern highlands and get a quick bite to eat seeing this was the first time as a family after covid restrictions lifted that we could go out to a restaurant. The restaurant is beautiful and fits in with the nostalgia of the area. After choosing a table to wait for an order, this took forever and it felt like we were forgotten about as others who came in after were attended to before us.This was a good 15 to 20 mins and When table service arrived the waitress was pleasant enough. They had now stopped serving lunch and there was not allot on offer not even any scones. We had a coffee and left soon afterwards on our long journey back to Sydney feeling very disappointed and dissatisfied. Could we of just got in at the wrong time and maybe after a busy day they "dropped their guard".A possible once off, Needless to say we won't take a chance again there even with all the good reviews on trip advisor. Hope this does not happen to anyone else.

This cafe in a general store and local post office offers a very limited range of dishes such as pies, quiches and salads for lunch with cakes, coffee, juices and milkshakes.
It is an interesting location with some local produce and condiments for sale, a book exchange and locals coming and going to the post office which is also inside the large and rambling building.
The food was satisfactory and the service friendly and attentive.

Thankyou for your review, however I'm not sure you had the opportunity to see our menu in addition to our display fridge, which is a full modern cafe offering of breakfasts and lunches, more than a dozen meals beyond gourmet pies and salads, such as pastas, burgers, steak sandwiches, smashed avocado and traditional breakfasts. We have not had quiches for at least a year. Most of our menu is available online at exeterstore.com.au
Hopefully we will have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future to try more of our menu. Kind regards, Craig

Wow! What a gem! We went as a family of 7 and the staff could not be more accommodating! The staff were courteous, and helpful. The food was served in a timely manner and was delicious. I had the chicken tacos, others had the beef burger, pancakes, smashed avo on toast. All delicious and well presented. When I am next in the area will certainly visit again. Well done team!

Today, I went to this lovely venue for my friend's birthday celebration. There were about 15 of us. We had to be seated on 2 different tables.
The food was delicious, great ingredients and presentation.
I had the chicken teriyaki burger. It was so delish, marinated chicken breast, grilled pineapple, Swiss cheese and caramelized onions on a Turkish roll.
The service was quick, friendly and efficient.
I highly recommend this eatery, but bookings are essential.
The decor and atmosphere was lovely.

Stopped by Exeter General Store around 2.15 pm on Sunday just in time before kitchen closed at 2.30 pm. Waitress not very attentive. Ordered 2 x beef burgers, smashed avo, milkshake, orange juice and skim cappuccinos. It was a cold afternoon but they don’t serve hot chips. This is a must in the Southern Highlands! Nice space inside but the general store is very small and limited goods to buy. Also has the post office (tiny area). Could be more amazing and a real destination. Not a place you would go out of your way to visit especially.

This was a great place to visit. The town was so nice for a stop on the way. Everyone was very friendly and the food was outstanding. I enjoyed the zucchini pasta with goats cheese and their coffee is delicious. I highly recommend. They have so many options for everyone including vegetarians. Will definately visit again.

Staff were perfunctory, service was average. Spiced Pumpkin Salad poorly prepared and downright unpleasant. Neither of us finished it. Only thing to recommend this place is the coffee, which was excellent and the only reason I am giving two stars instead of one. We won't be going back

A short way past McDonalds and the fast food family is the quaint town of Exeter where you start to get back into the country experience. It’s a nice change from the city and highway travel and surprisingly close. Nice breakfast and coffee here, outdoor and indoor tables. Worth a short travel off the main rd to get here.
