In hot afternoon time - the best place in the old centre: fresh drinks (mineral water with wine and ice) and olives for free) nice service, but don't speak English.

We had just arrived in Mérida, dumped our cases in the hotel and went in search of somewhere to eat. It was gone 4 pm by the time we turned up here. The waiter was very apologetic and explained that they closed from 4 pm (I forget when they re-opened). So we ordered a drink while we pondered what to... More

We shared a number of tapas here after visiting the various Roman sites nearby, and were amazed by the variety and the prices. Despite having lived in Spain for some years and visited several times afterward, there are selections in Extremadura whose names we did not recognize, but the waiter was very helpful. I don't think I've ever seen a... More

Perfect place to stop for lunch near the Roman ruins and the Roman museum. I found the waitress and service to be fantastic, as opposed to some other reviewers. She was very helpful in helping me select my order and her recommendation of the goats cheese with ham and marmalade (try it!) was spot on. Also when they took my... More

This place is right outside the Roman Museum. Food was good, but service was frankly rude. And that's been the trend in all 3 restaurants (2 highly rated, the third poorly rated) here in Merida. We had the Tapas sampler (#4) and 'mixed salad', it was a good relatively light lunch for 2 people.

Try the two tapas suggestions on the front of the menu (a sausage and a cheese). Also there is one that is a tomato/picante that was amazing.. Wine is slightly better at their neighbor Via de la tapa but the service and selection at Castuo is far superior!

Fantastic value, great atmosphere, wonderful tapas and snacks, difficult to spend much as the prices are so reasonable. Basically a deli selling mainly local specialities with a dozen tables out front. Value, quality and location by national museum and Roman sites means it's very popular but worth the nervy/competitive wait for a table to come free. Mixed plates give chance... More

If you come to Mérida, you are most likely in town to see the archaeological remains. You're in luck, because the Despensa del Castúo is located about 50 meters from the entrance to the Museo Nacional de Arte Romano, and perhaps 50 more from the entrance to the Theater/Amphitheater complex. So the location is perfect, but is the food good?... More
