I hadn't been to the Charcoal since the early 90s, but going in earlier this week was like stepping back in time. Everything (possibly including the menu!) was just the same. This made for a slightly odd dining experience. The interior of the restaurant is looking decidedly tired, and there's a slightly sad, neglected feeling to it which dampens the... More

Haven't been here for years. Has to be one of the oldest, yet still going strong restaurants in St.Helens. Food was really nice. Great choice of food and very reasonably priced, even the steaks. Still do some old fashioned food like Prawn Cocktail for starters and proper Jam Rolly Polly made with suet pastry. Cona Coffees with crean floating on... More

Recently ate here for my nan's birthday with 17 family members. We had the table booked for 5.30 but sat in the bar for around 5 minutes beforehand (which is more like an old pub). Drinks are reasonably priced and cheaper than most restaurants. We were called through to eat and the dishes came out fast so everyone ate at... More

Very scruffy and decor depressing. Im not sure how people think this is any kind of quality. On entering the restaurant there were metal long 'planks' or whatever lining the stairs which made you feel as though you were entering a builders yard. The staff were polite and somewhat friendly, but like the place came across as given up, As... More

I've not been here in years but I went for an early dine before the theatre. It has an amazing standard of food. Everything we had was cooked to perfection and I couldn't wait for the jam roly poly. The staff are very traditional with their little aprons on which is lovely to see and they are very friendly and... More

Went with my good lady wife Saturday last. Loved the place. Step back into the 70s with the music but the service and the food are always first class. A better steak you will struggle to find certainly at the price. This place is an Institution I would hate to lose. A credit to the current owners and staff who... More

This place is an institution in St Helens - The Charcoal has managed to adapt and invent over the years but the main thing is - The Food - it is good wholesome stuff - not fancy fare - but try and find a better steak meal around here, you won't.

Wonderful restaurant. Came here for my 21st Birthday and been quite a few times inbetween. The décor is a little tired but the food more than makes up for it!! Lots of choice and the food is beautiful.

Good food at good prices. As probably said b others, it looks very old fashioned inside and could do with bringing into 2017 in terms of decor, but the food remains good and my steak was fantastic. I would return.
