Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My chicken good, my husband's Senior flake and chips $24 disappointing. Lovely salad, thin slice of fish in thick batter, looked OK on outside, gluggy inside. He's 94 so wouldn't complain but we won't go back. Meals here last winter were always delicious.

Food was all well presented and tasty, and while standard fare there were some nice extra touches. It was served by pleasant and very helpful staff who were well on top of allergies too.. Only knocked a star off because the outside of the pub...- where we ate on the deck - is best described as historic. Frankly it's rather grimy (though the furniture is clean) but just needs a wash and coat of paint one of these days to fix that. To be clear though inside has been renovated and is clean and fresh, and the toilets are new and spotless. So don't get hung up on the outside which at least has that lovely old country pub character totally lacking in the new suburban beer barns. There was a band coming on after our Sunday lunch so if that's your thing that's another good reason to drop in. Thoroughly enjoyable.More

We stopped at the pub for a few quick beers. We were greeted with quick and friendly service, and really enjoyed having a chinwag the bartender. I really like how the pub is laid out, giving respect to the pubs history and some modern touches....Well done to all involved.More

There was a wonderfully happy vibe with the fireplaces giving warmth and atmosphere. There was live music playing and the food surpassed our expectations. I had the roast pork. It was plated beautifully and tasted amazing. A thick slice of pork surrounded by crackling sitting...on a bed of sauerkraut and topped with mashed potato and gravy. My son ordered the linguine marinara and it was very generous not only in size but the amount of lovely seafood through the pasta.More

We’ve had a house at Venus Bay for 25 years and seen the highs and the lows of this pub from being an absolute banger of a avenue in early 2000/ to a a disaster zone. Whoever owns it now has done a good job...at turning it around to its former glory but tonight we had a booking for dinner and at arriving were told that we only had 1 hour to eat and get out for the next booking which was very poor form given we weren’t told this when we booked - we have 4 children and to try and get them seated and order and there have quite a wait for the food to be out in an hour is actually really ridiculous … we canceled a second drink order because we had to leave our table and I am really disappointed that after spending $200 on food and drink in 1 hour we had to “move on” to make way for another booking - greedy practices and lack of personalised service let to a pretty poor experience tonight - really not good enough and I don’t know if I’ll be back after 25 years again any time soon :(More

We have been to the tarwin pub several times since it’s refurbishment and relaunch. Being from VENUS BAY we often frequent the pub with our extended family. The ambience is welcoming and down to earth with staff offering a refreshing and no nonsense level of...excellent service. Food is very good and decent size. Great indicative of the new owners who are more than happy to sit down and chat with patrons. Will get better and better with time and patronage. Keep up the great work for the area and the locals. Attended at the Tarwin Lower Hotel - Riverview Hotel. Ordered the Porterhouse steak (Rare), slow cooked pork belly, coconut & sweet chilly prawn, garlic bread and kids spaghetti bolognese and kids nuggets and chips. Personally I have sinned there for over 20 years. It is...not the same old pup it used to be. There are new owners and they have tinkered a bit with the layout inside but it's not too much different. The menu seems a bit all over the shop - some traditional items such a steak and parmars to sweet chilly prawns and pesto pasta. There's a video screen showing the dishes. If only the reality was consistent with the images Garlic bread. Soggy. Looked like the Coles $2 ones. Not really pleasant and for $9 would have expected grilled bruschetta style. The slow cooked park belly showed what looked like nice brown crispy crackle - the reality was a soggy chewy top of fat. Looked good but appearances were deceptive. If you're not going to have crackle- take the top fat off and dont make it look like crackle. Served with some orangy cap page, lumpy mash and okay pieces of stewed apples. For an ala carte Restaurant it would have been borderline main size for a pub it was almost an Entre size. $32 it was a litte underwhelming. My steak was okay ordered rare and a touch over but okay. $36. Was a nice size so no complaints there. Could have made a tad more effort with the salad and the chips looked like Birdseye ones or similar. Sweet chilly prawns were a good size - Entre only but not overcooked or too spicy. Thumbs up for that one. The kids spag $12... bit disappointed - had a special needs person with us so limited food choices. AskDear friend, hope you had a good weekend a large serve but no can do. Not paying $24 for kids quality spag bol so she got a big mac on the way home. In todays world, a little flexibility wouldn't go amiss. The nuggets and chips - $12 - 6 nuggets and 12 chips. We counted them. Really....say no more. $10 each for sticky date pudding and lemon meringue pie. Now I appreciate most are bought in and not made on sight. Both looked like they were bought at the local IGA just up the road. The sticky date was served with canned cream, you know the one you squirt, the meringue was chewy and not overly nice. The pie was that perfectly round pastry you get in the ones from the supermarket. Couple of service issues - had to ask for a spoon for the Spag Bol, and the deserts. Bir poor and more training need for the service staff. On a positive the staff were very pleasant and friendly. Drinks, normal and reasonable prices. The pub has a wonderful opportunity. It's the only pup for miles and can really make themselves a destination pup. No promo of local produce - and there is lots around from the fish from Corner Inlet to the beef and pork of Gippsland, potatoes from Thorpdale- the list is endless. I think they need to workout who they are. Here's some ideas - you're a heritage pup in the farming area of south Gippsland. You're not a posh spot in Dalesford or the Yarra Valley. So be that. A good place you can go for a cold pint, good Parma, jucey steak and crispy flatty tails with handmade chips. Unfortunately think we'll dine in the cafe in Venus Bay next time.More
