Hotel staff confirmed my desire to go here after a 3PM arrival. I was seated at 3:45. I had the local beer and one of the local specials. Both were terrific. The service was very good. If I every see Bamburg again I'll return.

It was Saturday night and we had no reservations!! We tried several restaurants and this is the one that seated us. It was a bit cold, but they have blankets and served us quickly. I had the pork belly and so did 2 others, it...More

Could be the best spot to sit outside and eat to people watch. It is located right on the main intersection in old town by the bridge and Schlenkerla. We walked right up and grabbed a table for dinner. The food is typical Bamberg and...More

I had the beef instead of pork. It was good. I would put less sauce as it takes out flavour from the meat. Main issue (if you could say so) is you can not pay with credit card. Price very good

good place to soak up atmosphere, love the food of course the original rauch bier. Great Bavarian food service exceptional and very friendly. The rauch bier and sauerkraut are a great combination. Would definitely recommend.

I don't know a lot about traditional Frankisch cuisine, but I'm pretty sure this is it. Went here for the 2nd time in two years, and it was consistently good for both visits. The beer is (duh) excellent, the food is down-home (Frankisch style?) good,...More

Charming antique interior and very pleasant outside too, overlooking as it does Bamberg's ancient centre. We enjoyed our lunch of Pilsner and potato soup, for €11.50 for two. Friendly service from our Lederhosen-ed waiters, who earlier gave us helpful directions to places that served breakfast.

We tried to eat there but the waitress was so rude that we gave up. Disgusting place. Would never recommend.

Lovely food, huge meals. Theresa ( Daisy) was the best waitress! Explained the menu, great conversation and has travelled the world. Thanks for putting up with us drunken Aussies. This restaurant is great to sit outside and watch the goings on.

Lunched here with a friend. Great atmosphere when you sit outside. Staff were friendly. We had a pram with us and staff stored it inside, even made a makeshift change table. I had the recommended Bamberg special which was just the right size so I...More

Actually this is less a question and more a comment to you about the staff at the Katchelofen. I know the owner and did know the staff (as of a few years ago) and the place is far from rude. I am sorry that you had a bad experience with that particular waitress, but instead of getting on a website and land blasting it, telling people to never go there, maybe you should have asked to speak to the manager. As for them "reserving good service for native Germans" this is a complete and utter falsehood.. my husband and I are Americans, and we were treated so well that when we left Germany they actually gave me a card signed by the whole staff and a beer mug and the owner and some of the waitstaff cried with me over the fact that we wouldn't be seeing each other anymore. These people were so friendly in fact that when my sister came to visit us while we lived in Germany, we were excitedly approached by one of the waitresses at the Christmas Market and she hugged MY SISTER who she didn't even know, but said that she would love just because she was my sister. Then she insisted on taking her to meet the staff who was on duty at the restaurant, and they fed us for FREE. And before you go saying that my German must have been really good or something, I barely speak the language ... just a few sentences, because no matter how much I understand I just can't speak it. Has it occurred to you at all, that MAYBE just MAYBE you were putting off the unfriendly vibes because you were... as you said "forced" go there because everywhere else was to full? As for the food being average, that is your opinion... and I can't say anything about that... other than I will disagree with you and I have eaten at a lot of places all over Germany and grew up with a Germany Father who was an Executive Chef.

Authentic atmosphere-feel, sit with the locals and enjoy really good German food -"get to the point" waitresses. Trout was excellent, juicy pork meat with sides of sauerkraut & boiled potatos, the apple dessert (local speciality) was fantastic - crispy baked slices - YUM. Very affordable for the 4 of us, 3 course dinner with a round of smoked beer & local white wine with main course @ Euro 22/pp.
