It's fair to say I've eaten my share of doughnuts over the years... some would even say a tad too many. When it comes to these doughnuts I don't believe you can eat too many, it's worth every bite. We were only in Melbourne for...3 days and returned here twice on our second and last day. It was the only food destination we visited twice. Morgan was so friendly and talkative- such a nice guy and deserves all the success he's experiencing right now. Even the simple doughnuts like the vanilla glaze and cinnamon were incredible. The brioche base really sets it apart from a lot of the cheaper variations I've tried. If you get a chance, ask them to heat up the cinnamon a bit, brings it to another level, absolutely incredible. The filled doughnuts are great too, our favourite on the first visit was undoubtedly the 'Twix me baby, one more time'. It wasn't too heavy, the balance of flavours was spot on and the syringe filling made it a fun experience. My girlfriend also liked the 'All about that milo', but for me it packed too much chocolate. The dough and individual elements, including the filling were fantastic, but just too intense for my taste. The second visit was really amazing. The few doughnuts we had come specifically for; the cookie monster, bueno and creme brûlée, were unfortunately on the second week rotation, so none were available. Morgan however was kind enough to place them on the production list for the next day, so we could try them! Really nice gesture and we both appreciated it the next day! The cookie monster is phenomenal. I typically prefer simpler doughnuts, and whilst the cinnamon warmed up was my favourite, cookie monster was not far behind! The dough across the board is just so light and fluffy, which allows denser fillings not to detract from the texture of the doughnut. The cake batter filling was incredible and the icing and toppings just complemented it so well, giving it a solid crunch. The bueno also didn't disappoint, the creme could have been a bit stronger in flavour but really such a minor fault. It really did seem to melt in your mouth and the bueno chunks on top broke up the textures nicely once again. The only slight disappointment was the creme brûlée. The concept really excited me. A crispy top with a creamy interior. the execution of the glaze and crust were perfect- exactly how it should be on a regular creme brûlée. The volume of filling in my opinion however was a bit too much, and really overpowered the doughnut. The flavour itself was great, just too much of it. Still glad we tried it, but didn't blow us away, compared to the others we sampled over the course of those two days. I would say I'm sad that bistro morgan isn't in Sydney, but I'm actually thankful. If it were, I'd be visiting every day... And my waistline wouldn't appreciate that. I don't rave about too many places, but this is a must if you're in or around Melbourne.More
