A wonderful place clearly a favourite with foodies. Not cheap but worth paying extra for. Excellent ambience and friendly attentive staff.

We popped in here for a quick beer and bite to eat. Absolutely loved it. Homemade soup and duck pate was fab. The two ladies running it were fantastic. Really friendly and caring. Had a lovely time here. Really recommend it.

A really enjoyable lunch last Friday in most congenial surroundings. We opted for the light menu with great choices and very reasonable. The beef sandwich was stunning, loads of rare beef with a small salad and chips - very filling, very good and great value. Ham, egg and chips was equally good, with layers of thinks proper ham, two eggs... More

Popped in for a drink the food looked amazing but just wanted a drink as the day was full of sun in the sky. The lady behind the bar was very pleasant and chatty. We wanted to have a drink outside with the sun shinning the outside wasn't very good few green chairs scattered around the place. Could do with... More

We had a good meal and the dessert (ginger and chocolate cake with marmalade semi-freddo) was really really good! Unfortunately, we booked at rather short notice for a busy night and our table was a little too near the bar for our liking. It was also a Friday night - and we were unaware that Friday is jazz night and... More

Had a wonderful experience at The Old Black Lion. Celebrating with family we had a lovely evening - the Sparkling Wine was on ice and the food was amazing. One of our party had Beef Stew which was rich and tender. I had a steak which as requested was rare and perfect. Another of our party had the Bream which... More

Passing through Hay on Wye on a cool 1st of March, we popped in for a drink. It was very quiet, so we had our pick of the tables. The log burner was lit so we sat very comfortably near to a welcome source of heat. Having seen the lunch menu we decided to stop for lunch. Two courses for... More

Went for Valentines dinner in this traditional and friendly pub/restaurant. Food was great value and we liked the fact that the glasses of wine were not overpriced compared to a bottle. Will definitely go again

Fantastic menu, ate there both nights of our two night stay because the food was so good on the first night.. As a vegetarian I often find menus are quite boring for us veggies, not so at the Old Black Lion.. Well done to the Chef... Try the triple cooked chips!!!!
