Location and contact

This famous traditional café with its 130 year history was first opened in 1876 and at the turn of the 20th century it was a popular meeting point for leading lights in the world of art, literature, politics and science such as Arthur Schnitzler, Sigmund Freud, Peter Altenberg and Leo Trotzki. Then, like today, the legendary literature café was a meeting point for all ages, regular guests, Viennese locals and visitors. Unique architecture combined with the best coffee specialties, classic Viennese cuisine and finest home-made pastries make every visit a special experience. Daily Live Piano Music from 5pm on! My family and I had dinner here today. Short wait to get in but well worth it. Great interior, atmosphere, music, service and food. Cannot praise it enough. If you visit Vienna you must go here.

The building was formerly a bank, so the architecture inside is very impressive, with domed ceilings and pillars. It’s traditions are very much ongoing, and it was evident that the waiters took care of their regulars.

I had diner here, on Christmas, after waiting 45 minutes in a queue - be prepared to wait in a line, especially on holidays. The atmosphere was really impressive! Magnificent arches, warm lights and piano music, all this blend perfectly with the red chairs. The...More

We had a very uncomfortable, squashed up wait for 10 minutes plus before we were shown to a table. The drinks were nice (Cafe Melange and a hot chocolate) but the Sacher Torte was a bit of a let down (might just be preference). Decor...More

We went there and ordered two desserts and cafe latte. The desserts were low than average nothing special at all, the cafe latte was literally pure milk, nothing but milk. We asked for tap water more than 3 times the waiters were very unfriendly. 30...More

Sure it’s a tourist trap that you have to queue to get in (unless you have booked) but oh so worth it for fans of coffee and cake. It opened in 1867 so has a venerable history and great ambience but the prices are reasonable....More

The desserts and drinks were good... but not worth going out of your way to experience as we had similar good food in other places all over town.
