Unfortunately this dusty cafe is appreciated by some of the older Viennese types, if not it would close. The wait staff are brusque and rude and the cooking is typical, with little flair and even less flavor. If you have nowhere else to eat, then go hungry ! This place is not there to serve anyone but the crustiest of... More

Classic old school coffee house in the centre of Vienna. Inexpensive and unpretentious with friendly staff. More locals than tourists.

Let me tell you as a local that Café Bräunerhof is definitely not a tourist trap. If your guidebook recommends Café Central, Sacher or Demel, go ahead and queue there, but if you want an authentic experience (obligatory grumpy waiters included) and stand a higher chance to find a table, head to Bräunerhof. I recommend the Melange, which is reasonably... More

The principal reason for our visit was to sample Vienna's famed coffee and cake culture. The coffee was fine, but cakes very disappointing - bordering on stale, and no cream was provided - an essential ingredient! Wouldn't go back.

Typical Austrian coffeehouse right at the heart of downtown, very good food selection and very good sweets - specially the Mohr in Hemd

We just stopped by to have some coffee and an apfelstrudel. Both very good. But the most pleasant aspect of the visit was the interior and the service. Truly old fashioned and courteous service. The interior is old and very Vienna I would say. And not at all expensive. Seems to be visited by Viennese inhabitants as well which is... More

Most people visit a city for a common reason: to experience something that can not be done anywhere else. An authentic cafe-restaurant with its early modern intellectual aura, newspapers with sticks (thankfully not only in German), lovely Viennese food such as schnitzel, meaty soups and desserts, open kitchen, this place satisfies that common reason. It was frequented by 20th century... More

Stumbled across this café/restaurant in the search for Wiener Schnitzel. A traditional café that looked like it hadn't changed from the 1930's and so much the better for it. We were seated by a very friendly waiter who knew his business superbly well. Ordered the Wiener Schnitzel for us both and a beer, and it was superb. A traditional piece... More

It's very central but a little bit hidden, very much loved by locals, so you can have an authentic experience of Vienna here. The decor is very old and atmospheric. The service, as others have noted, ranges from charmless efficiency to downright hostility, and is never attentive. Still worth it, I think, for such an experience.

Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
