I had high hopes for this place because of the glowing reviews. I shared the salmon appetizer with my husband and it was good, but fairly unremarkable. The Arctic char was not fishy and was presented nicely, but was just ok. I had several bones and the skin wasn't quite crispy. It was not bad but I was a little... More

Went here based on a friend's recommendation. Excellent food, wonderful presentation and very reasonable prices (even for Iceland!) fish of the day was cod with a wonderful leek and dill sauce, and the bruschetta was really generous with the toppings. Worth every kroner. Loved the rosemary bread as well

Whilst we aren't the biggest fish fans, we thought "when in Rome" and booked Ostabudin. We were not disappointed - the fish curried soup was sublime, and the Atlantic cod was one of the best pieces of fish I'd ever had - so flavorful. The other half went for the Arctic char - which was also very fresh and tasty.... More

Get a plater and try out the local cheese and meats, if you are brave then opt for the horse as it's surprisingly good (and used to be a staple meat in the Icelandic diet, much like chicken might be to us)

We were recommended this spot for their soup by our walking tour guide. It was a good chilly day in February so we ducked in for warm soup. They had 5 choices for lunch, we got the fish soup, fish of the day and vegetable soup. All were absolutely wonderful, tasty and so satisfying. Service was excellent and the overall... More

We have been there by chance and because my favourite restaurant in Reykjavik was already booked. But having lunch there, just made us book a table for dinner too! The service was excellent (especially the girl in the evening) and the food super good. Try the lamb there, I have never had such a good meat! Also the dessert was... More

We weren't too hungry so we split an appetizer of smoked/cured salmon and a main dish of lamb. Both were fantastic! The salmon was cured perfectly -- just beyond raw -- and dissolved on the tongue. The lamb, meanwhile, tasted lambier than any of the US or Australian lamb I've ever had before. It was a sharper taste that came... More

RSVP a table for two for 6, Walk-ins only after 6. The bread and whipped butter was very rustic and hearty, like bread should be. Our starter was a generous small cheese plate. I had the goose confit with meat balls that came with a cream based sauce. It was amazing. We took the rest of the bread to go... More

This is by far one of the best restaurants I have had the pleasure to visit. The smoked salmon was excellent and my wife had the Goose salad which was exquisite. We followed with servings of Atlantic Char - very similar to salmon but nicer, at least I enjoy it better that cooked salmon. It was all accompanied by a... More

We visited Ostabudin having seen the excellent reviews on Tripadvisor. It didn't disappoint . We had salmon with pickled cucumber to start followed by salt cod and lamb. All three were excellent. The restaurant is fairly small and you can't reserve a table after 6.30pm so be sure to get there early to secure a table.

Description
Food connoisseurs and other gastronomes have ever since the year 2000 slipped into our basement during lunch hour to feast on various delicacies. But of course everyone knows that because ever since the restaurant opened for business it has been the least kept secret in the area.

Ostabuðin has truly been an oasis on Skolavorðustigur because we have tried our best to offer a wide varaity of fresh and curious products which have tickled our patrons taste buds and in turn trickled salivating reflexes in the city center.

Even though we have taken some pride in the queue that has formed outside our entrance every single day during lunch break for the past 15 years we have finally expanded our premises. Thus we can now welcome our patrons from dawn til dusk and offer them a variety of fish and meat dishes which we have refined with passion. Of course there is also a lot of cheese on the menu and now we can also serve wine with our fare.

Our daily specials always include both a fish dish and a soup during lunch hour on weekdays. Do not hesitate to ask what is on offer today. Also, our seafood soup never disappoints.

Our guests might have to share tables during the lunch hour rush but who knows – maybe you will make new friends.

Bon appetit, Joi.
