Cafeteria style but don’t let that discourage you. Food is delicious! The owner is very accommodating. Prices were reasonable by Reykjavík standards. We went 3 times during the week we were there. Lunches include salad, soup and fresh bread. It gets crowded with locals so...you may have to share a table. We considered that part of the experience. Mushroom soup was to die for. Highest recommendation!More

Went twice while staying nearby at Hotel Muli. It’s also close to the Hilton. Food was fabulous both times. The concept is that you pick your main dish and a side and that is served to you in the cafeteria line. You then help yourself...to the soup and small salad bar. The place is packed with locals and you may have to share a table, but that is part of the experience. Everything we had from fried fish to mushroom soup was delicious. The owner spoke English and was very accommodating. This was also the best bargain we found while here all week. We are going one more time tomorrow before heading to the airport.More

out in the east of town, we had their breakfast a la cart plate options for an early day. Other than some pensioner native old men types reading the paper together, we were the only ones. But it was hearty and authentic- smoked lamb on...butter and flat bread, kleina bow, pastry with cream, coffee. The smjor butter is really worth the hype as well. Very inexpensive as well. Tip: Do not rely on google or even the websites for times. Many places closed/opened differently than what is posted. Call first before making plans if they rely on certain times.More

We just came back from and enjoyable lunch at Mulakaffi. Currently only open for lunch. Perhaps in the summer they are open for dinner too,.., I would check before you go. This is cafeteria style dining.. but don't let that stop you down if you...want a hearty lunch . Just head up to the counter, and let the server know what main course and side you want, both the folks working the counter had enough English to explain most of what was on offer. We made our selections and sat down to eat. There are some smaller tables for two and four, but mostly some shared tables.. the place was packed with locals.. so we ended up sharing a table with another group. But not to worry every one was very friendly. You know your getting the real deal when several police officers are having lunch at the next table, a bunch of utility technicians in their coveralls at another, and a lot of office workers to filling up the place. There were three of us so we each picked one of the three main courses. My son had a dish of salted meat shredded and mixed with cabbage and potatoes, I had meatballs wrapped in cabbage, and my wife had the fish. The meals all included a small salad bar, and soup which was a creamy vegetable soup I really liked. All three of us agreed that the fish was the best, then the meatballs, then the shredded meat with cabbage and potatoes. Looking around after I got my food.. about 70% of locals had the fish which should have been a dead giveaway. Overall food was great, my wife found it a bit on the salty side but still very much enjoyed it. I would temper that by saying she has found about half the food in Iceland a bit salty. I usually salt my food so it was perfect for me. From what I gather the menu changes every day, so our selections are probably of little help. I uploaded a photo of the menu of the day.. unfortunately only in Icelandic. We really enjoyed this experience, we all agreed we were glad we went, even though we walked a mile in heavy wind and show to get there. I did give the service only 3/5 not that there was anything wrong with it.. it just hard to rate the service for cafeteria style dinning.More

A previous review on Trip advisor led us to Mulakaffi , just yards from City Park Hotel , and from the Hilton hotel. The lady who owns/ runs this restaurant is especially friendly, speaks great English and explains every dish and its ingredients. Yo u...get a main dish and a soup and coffe/ tea with complimentary refills for a set price. The food choices are changed daily , with two fish dishes and two meat dishes to choose between. Lots of potato dishes, but didnt find any fresh vegetables anywhere in Iceland . Not sure why unless too costly to import in March. The locals flock here including taxi drivers police and local business people. This tells you its reliably reasonably priced and good value. We went three times and thoroughly enjoyed our food and the hospitality.More

This place turned out to be next to our hotel thank goodness! Made our life easy as it snowed so only 10 paces to here. Lots of selections fish, meatballs, etc cup of drink and salad and soup. We had our savory soup first then our mains...the nice lady said we could. They eat the soup last but some soup is sweet with cream so watch out for this. Everything was cooked well. Yes it is abit like school canteen but for the price who cares and we had a great laugh watching all the locals coming and going and all the local police force that eat there must tell you something. Its twice the price in town so if you eat out be prepared to pay for nice surroundings.More

Absolutely fabulous food, simple, non pretentious, tasty, filling and wholesome. Lots of locals, including a number of police from across the road. Always a good sign.

This place is a bit like a works canteen in the fact that you get your tray, chose your main course and find a table! Salad, soup, bread, water/tea/coffee all included in the price. We ate here twice as it was just round the corner -literally...from our hotel. Both times were really good lovely fish and a good salad bar. Helpful staff who speak perfect English and explain everything. This place must be good as loads of locals go there as well as lots of Iceland’s police! Around 4,500-5000 krona for two.More

We went here for a dinner when looking for some local casual authentic foods. We were excited although had no idea on what to expect because only found Icelandic version of the menu online. It turned out being wonderful — the restaurant is clean and...simplistic, foods were healthy and so fresh, people who worked here were very kind and helpful. I initially wanted to order the fish cheeks as it sounded like the top 1 dish that local would go for, and the girl who helped preparing my food offered me to try it to make sure I will enjoy my food. It was very fresh but a bit too fishy for me, so I switched to lamb, and she provided me two kinds of sauce for me to try with the lamb. They also had soup and salad bar, I got to try the fruity porridge. My husband and I finished all the foods we had ordered and ended up feeling so happy that we decided to take this “adventure”. Highly recommend!More

It's a kind of a buffetstyle restaurant. It seemed to us that the guests were mainly locals. For us as tourists a nice experience. The food was decent but nothing more then that. The only real 'problem' with this place is the lack of atmosphere....It could easily be a lunch place in a hospital or the waitingroom of your average doctor. And that's a shame.More

We were staying at the City Park Hotel and did not even realise the Mulakaffi was there until our second day when we found it on TA. For those not staying at City Park take Laugervegar out of the city till you come to the...Hilton Reykjavik Nordica. Go past the Hilton and take the first right (Hallarmull) go up the hill past the City Park on the left and the entrance door is the next door on the left. It didn't have a sign outside the front and it was only due to it being dark and the eating area lit up that we found it and that was staying next door ! It is all in Icelandic but the fabulous ladies serving explained it all to us in perfect English. When we went there was a choice of two fish and two meat dishes and we chose the lamb and a lamb curry. We were advised to add lamb to the soup as the locals do. There were two types of soup, fresh bread, nan breads for the curry salads and tea or coffee all for roughly 2500ISK each. The food was delicious, filling and by far the cheapest meal we ate in Iceland. We paid similar for a bowl of soup each when we were at Strukkor. This is not really a place for a romantic meal as the lighting is bright and the tables are arranged canteen / Café style but for a filling meal at very affordable prices it can't be beaten. As has been previously mentioned it seems to be a firm favourite with the local law enforcement agencies and there were four police officers in when we ate. Highly recommendedMore

We visited this restaurant on the day of US VP Pence's visit to town and dined with a large portion of the local police force and some pensioners. Food is hearty and in large portions. The locals enjoyed soup poured over bread crusts with a...generous splash of cream. The portion size and pricing is in sharp contrast to the other restaurants we visited. There is no sign outside, and they close between lunch and dinner. Staff is friendly and will do their best to explain. Enjoy!More

Our search for a restaurant in Reykjavik that served tasty local dishes at reasonable prices was rewarded when we found this great cafe :))). They offer 3 entrees that vary daily, served with sides plus all you can eat salads, soups, and fresh breads... for...about 2500 ISK. The super friendly/helpful servers can provide explanations of their dishes, and will give you portions sized to request too... most of the diners are locals (= good indicator!). We really enjoyed the lamb and fish dishes (tasty and very yummy)... be sure to sample the traditional Icelandic brown bread too. We liked this place so much that we came back several times :)). Easy parking here as well... Enjoy!More
