This restaurant is not like usual restaurants. It's difficult to find and situated in a small cellar. But the atmosphere is absolutely beautiful. There are barrols of which you get the wine. Sometimes they are playing live acordeon. And - the most important thing - the traditional greek food cooked in a very small kitchen is very delicious. I can... More

Wonderful traditional taverna with excellent food that you choose from big pots in the kitchen. Retsina from huge barrels, crusty bread, generous portions, good service and excellent traditional Greek fare make this taverna a pleasure to support. There are only 8 tables and he closes when the food is finished. We will most certainly be back.

We visit Diporto every time we visit Athens, sometimes for many days in a row. It always offers the most tasty simple traditional food downtown (cuttlefish, fava, beans soup, probably the best chickpeas soup in the world, small fish, salad) and for 10 euros per person you can´t ask for more. But there is more: the ambience of joy and... More

I have lived in Athens for many years, and usually take visitors to this place for early lunch (it closes relatively early in the day, and serves people who have been working since before the crack of dawn), as I did again a few days ago, and thought to submit this review. None has been disappointed. You descend the big,... More

Diporto, means two doors. One to enter sober, the other to crawl out drunk. The wine was so good you could not resist. It was the meeting place for the market workers, and the joint for the drug people. That was before WWII. Today there are no drug adicts, only people from the market, intellectuals and tourists. Wine and food... More

This is as authentic as it gets. Food prepared from the day's fresh ingredients, ice cold water, fresh crusty bread, wine from the barrel, and local characters. This year we had bowls of chick peas, salad, a crushed bean dip (I think!), and freshly cooked sardines. More than enough for three for €28. With the bill came some melon, hearty... More

After exploring the city we heard about diporta and wanted to give it a try. As we walked we couldn't seem to find the place until we looked at the numbers on the wall. We then found a small stairwell that led you downstairs. We walked in around 12 and it was quiet empty but not for long. We sat... More

Experience starts Going down on the stairs after being walkin all morning the central market. You get to a under floor were everything is old and (in a good way) and you feel a good energy about food, the Chef cooking behind a simple home style gas kitchen and peeling some onions in the table in front of you, the... This is as much [if not more] as an anthropological experience than a gastronomic one. You eat what is for the day, well prepared, simple and cheap with a good rough wine served by a grumpy character. I love this place I go there nearly every time I go to the Athinas Agora. This is Greece of the 50's or... More

I didn't want to review this place. Because I'm not sure if tourists should be going here. It is definitely a local place and you can feel that the owner dosent care to have tourists there. I thought the wine from the barrel was great and very strong. The overall experience was unlikely any I've ever had. And the food... More

Staying in Omonia

Neighbourhood Profile
Omonia
Omonia Square is as plain in appearance as Syntagma is grand. Surrounded largely by functional blocks from the 1950s and 60s and no longer boasting its underground stalls, the square is now mostly frequented by immigrants and bargain shoppers. The most rewarding area to explore is to the south. Set off down Athinas Street, with the Acropolis gradually coming into focus in the distance, and you will get a sense of old commercial Athens, especially at the picturesque meat, fish and vegetable markets some way beyond the City Hall. The blocks to the west of Athinas are home to many Chinese and South Asian traders, adding a multicultural atmosphere to what was until the late 1990s a very homogenous society.
