Belem is a fantastic day trip from Lisbon. One of our highlights were the egg custard tarts at this famous patisserie. They have been turning out their ‘secret recipe’ tarts since 1837. There is usually a queue but the queue is for the café section....If you’re not planning on sitting down at a table and you’re happy to take your tarts across the road to the park opposite, then you can buy your tarts from the takeaway door which has little or no line. We watched them package ours up, straight from the oven tray into a pretty blue and white box, then we took our still-warm tarts over to the park and sat under a shady tree to eat them. They were so good that at the end of the day when we were waiting for our return tram, we made a last minute dash into the shop and bought another half dozen to take home. A little greedy perhaps but totally worth it.More

Every time we are in the area, we try to stop in and get a pastel nata, some bicas, and an aperitif. The pairings are lovely. The ambiance is beautiful. It’s quintessential Portugal! The only drawback is that it is a tourist attraction. So the...lines can be long, and it can get quite crowded. Sometimes you get to the counter to place an order, or pay for your check, and you are easily lost in the crowd. But it’s worth checking out if you happen to be in Belem.More

My number one place to go for pastel de nata in Lisbon. You can take the tram from Praça do Comércio and the stop is right in front of Pastéis de Belem. I know it’s a bit more expensive than the normal natas but I’m...sure it’s worth it! Every time when I’m in Lisbon I have to visit them and the best thing is to eat them when they are fresh and warm, add some cinnamon powder with a cup of cafe. They have their special recipe that’s different than the rest of the nata you can find in Portugal. Some time there is a line waiting outside of the shop but that is only for takeaway. If you don’t want to wait, there are plenty of seats inside, a very big garden too.More

In 45 years I've eaten more of my favourite sweet pies, Pasteis de Belem or de Nata.or de crema than I can remember, so I think I know the best. Certainly, these are amongst the best , but in my opinion are not the best....Also at the take away price 400% more costly than a store price , or more than double of anywhere else in Portugal , somewhat removes any pleasure. Hotels often give them free with cafe. You are assured this is nothing but a tourist trap rip-off. The shopping experience is normal. The tourist only cafe at the rear for which hundreds line up for outside, is an old characterless room. my tip is to avoid it and take cafe and Pasteles from anywhere nearby for a better experienceMore

Better than pastel de nata. The place is so spacious and big. The sweets taste so good. The staff are friendly.

It´s well known for its "Pastel de Nata". When we were planning our trip to Lisbon, Portugal in October 2020, many people recommended us the "Pastel de Nata" from Belem. Once in Portugal, we realized that Lisbon is full of "Pastel de Nata" because it´s...like a national dessert. Even though we had eaten plenty of different options of "Pastel de Nata", we went to Belem to taste the famous one. The bakery is so big and really organized to buy to take away, they also have a nice box and bags. I´m afraid I didn´t like it at all, To be honest, I had much better during my journey in Portugal. Actually, its egg flavor is too much.More

First meal we ate in Portugal, almost right off the plane. Really tasty! We ate pasteis de nata many times across the country on that trip, but the ones from Pasteis de Belem were never beaten. We managed to get there just before the line...got bad, thankfully, and didn't have to wait at all. We'd definitely go back if we were in Lisbon again.More

A must when in Belem. The crowds outside (especially around the take-away bit) are testament to how good the pasteis de nata are but once you’re inside, you are efficiently shown to a table (the cafe goes on for miles) and the variety of cakes...we sampled were all of the highest quality. The pasteis are very good, though.More

The best custard tarts we had in Portugal - their Pasteis de Belem are best enjoyed warm when they are especially delicious and flaky. You can't not go to Pasteis de Belem if you're in the area.

Oh yes! That’s what we did! The price is the same and your server can bring you the pastries when you’re ready to leave and just charge it on your bill.
