This is one of those things you just 'have to do'. We were lucky enough to walk straight in and order four custard pasties and walk out in under two minutes. We walked across to the river to eat them. The custard pastries are the 'must haves', and although they're good, personally I wouldn't buy them again.

Too many travelers for who lives in Lisbon - the success of this fantastic typical pastry made of this café a crowded place (even if they expanded a lot the place in the last few years). A must do and try for any traveler passing by Lisbon - especially because of he various monuments and museums nearby.

You must absolutely try the Natas they prepare here. The aroma, the vibe, the taste, the service..... it all adds up to an unforgettable experience :)

Something you have to try! Wonderful taste and service. I enjoyed the place, around 8PM is not usually crowded.

We had already sampled many custard tarts in Lisbon, but decided we had to have some here as well as we arrived in Belem as it is supposed to be the original and the best. We had coffee and pastry standing at the counter and both were great. You might expect a tourist rip off sort of price, but it... More

Don't be put off by the queue - that is only for take-aways. Bypass the queuers and go inside. There are at least 30 tables in various different rooms. The cakes are the best l have ever tried and we paid €5.50 for two cakes, one coffee and a white port.

The place was great, all bits like tiles, chairs, lamps matching... and pasteis de nata were wonderful! I recommend the place, it's a must go!

The people at the hostel I was staying at recommended this place and I can see why, the food is pretty cheap - a Portuguese tart for example is €1.05. The only downside is this place is very popular and the queues are quite long. I was in Lisbon on my own for the weekend so took my food to... More

Went there twice on our visit to Lisbon, the Portuguese tarts are delicious so are other snacks. Very busy place so take away might be a better option which we did. Price for a Portuguese tart is a bit high just over an euro but definitely worth a try!

Staying in Belem

Neighbourhood Profile
Belem
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.
