This is a famous cafe where Portuguese artists used to sit. It presents some of their art works. Not their best, in my oppinion. Place is small and fairly dark. Interesting small tables with marble tops. Mediocre coffee at best. The outside seating is clearly popular among locals too and provides good "visuals" of teh action on Rua Garret.

The cocktails are good and strong. The staff are super friendly too. Great music, lots of fun. Loved the decor. Check out the Frida Kahlo mural upstairs. Nice and airy with massive ceilings. Slightly off the beaten track away from the Barrio Alto craziness.

A quick coffee stop but not an ordinary one. Check out this historical cafe, it's wonderful exterior shop front and delicate wood worked interior. Have a coffee & nata standing at the 'bar' or sit down outside with a beer at one of Lisbon's best locations to people watch! Whatever you chose, if you need to rest your feet at... More

Went there last Saturday took a patio table. Waited 10 minutes to see if any waiter would come to take my order. Got up unnoticed . Took a picture with Fernando Pessoa' statue and gave up waiting. I strongly believe that Fernando Pessoa turned into that statue waiting to get served.

Called in here for some drinks when in the area. We sat outside to watch the world go by. Staff were friendly and prices were reasonable.

We never miss an opportunity to visit 'Cafe a Brasileira' when we're in Lisbon. It's one of our favourite haunts - we just love sitting out on the terrace at night as it's one of the best places to people watch whilst enjoying the free street entertainment. As it's situated in the Largo do Chiado (Chiado Square), it's incredibly busy... More

We wanted a take an afternoon break and got an outside table. Ordered coffee and pastry. Very busy neighborhood. There musicians performing - 2 separate groups alternating their performance. Very lively.

Thinking of Café A Brasileira is reminding of Fernando Pessoa, one of the many great portuguese poets. His image is so associated to this Café (he used to go there) that there's a statue right in front of the Café and is almost every tourist take a pic with him. The Café itself is good, but is always very full... More

I came here at 8:00am in the morning and there's no customers. I ordered a coffee and data, it was okay - not very bad, not very good. The price is also reasonable. But for me, it's not a place that you "must come". Just for tourists :P

Poor service and getting a receipt was an ordeal. The legendary cafe is no longer there. What a pity.

Staying in Chiado & Carmo

Neighbourhood Profile
Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.
