Little eatery in Maia. Owner, originally from Setubal, runs a local place where he serves fresh fish and local beef. For 8,50€ he serves tomato and local fresh cheese, fresh fish or meat with salad, veggies and cooked or fried taters, all cooked perfectly well...and served generously. Grab a beer or a glass of wine. Nothing fancy, just good.More

We ordered some grilled meat (pork), which was off good quality and tasted quite good. Fries, however, were a bit soggy. Salad was okay. In sum a nice dish, however nothing really outstanding.

The menu choice is between fish and meat. Can definitely recommend the fresh fish beautifully cooked with local fresh veg. Service is attentive. All in all very good.

Good family-run restaurant. Do not look at the menu in the front door, since they will have usually the starters and 4 to 6 of the main courses that are written on the menu. The owner will kindly tell you what fresh fish and meat...he has and recommend you what to take. From the terrasse you can see him preparing your meal at the grill.More

It was a beautiful October evening and we decided to take a group of 7 guests to O Sagitario restaurant in Maia. It is a 40 minute drive from Caloura over to the north of the Island and, on the way, we caught a spectacular...view of the sun, setting. The restaurant is next to the church and street parking is not a problem. The restaurant is owned by a large fish and shellfish merchant based on Sao Miguel so you can guarantee the fish is going to be of the best quality and freshness. Diners are encouraged to go first into the shop on the ground floor to have a look at the fish available then go upstairs to the restaurant which is on a terrace (part of which is covered) overlooking the classic Portuguese church. We had phoned earlier to make a reservation purely because of the size of our party and our table was ready for us. Tables, with paper covers, and the chairs are basic aluminium. A charming lady waited on our table, she couldn't have been more helpful, and we ordered fresh cheese and bread to eat while ordering the fish. The cheese arrived with a sweet jam and made a welcome change from the normal, minced pepper sauce. A gentleman arrived to remind us of the names of the fish we had seen in the shop and suggested a large platter of mixed grilled fish for us to share (clearly an easier option) but this wasn't what we wanted. There is a fine line between helpfulness and encouraging guests to loose control of the bill and the amount of food required! In the end several of us ordered Swordfish and others ordered individual fish. All the fish was simply grilled (the chef needs to take a little more care not to overcook it) and served with tasty boiled potatoes and fresh salad. The fish was very much enjoyed by all. There is a good well priced wine list and to follow there are a few home made deserts in addition to the, all too-standard, manufactured ice cream novelty selection. O Sagitario is a good choice if you want to try the freshest Azorean fish available.More
