This place was one of our last stops on our trip to Clare Valley. We came without booking but fortunately there were still spots in the courtyard area, and luckily the weather was nice. The place has a lovely blend between the old style with...stone and the new. From what I saw, it seems there's several dining rooms. The beer garden was just a great spot to be in an open plan terrace. We recently had breakfast, so we didn't ate much. We just had the whole chicken to share between two. It was a good ration and delicious. Well cooked, not dry. Just perfect. Paired with a red wine that the waitress selected for us and did a good job selecting it. My only complaint would be that they took quite some time in serving the food. But that could be due to a large booking right next to us...More

This place is amazing! We had the most perfect night at Watervale Hotel! We booked in for a wine tasting prior to our dinner booking but when we arrived the staff suggested we combine our wine tasting with our dinner. We were then introduced to...the owner Warwick, who took us on a tour of the hotel prior to matching the wines to what we ordered. The food was stunning and the wine matched it perfectly. We will definitely be back and we will bring our friends and rave about this place for a very long time. 11/10!More

Had heard great things about the Watervale Hotel so we decided to go there. We had always driven past this hotel in years gone by and never went inside, and then it was closed for quite some time before its new owners took over and...lovingly restored it to its former glory whilst renovating it to give a more modern feel. The decor and blend of antique furniture with modern is amazing. We sat outside in the courtyard area as the weather was nice and sunny and got to meet the owners' dog Frankie. who is so cute. The menu is a mixture of tapas style dishes as well as larger main dishes, e.g. Rib Eye of Beef, Roasted Chicken, Lamb Milanese and Tomahawk Steak. They also do a Degustation Menu which we must do next time we visit. We decided to try the Trio of Empanadas, Chicken and Beef Fennel Meatballs and House Cut Chips with Mustard Aioli. All of the dishes were very tasty and delicious. The owners and staff were very friendly and it is clear to see that the Chef is very passionate about cooking and producing very good quality food. We also love the fact that they have chosen a different style of menu to the usual typical pub food too. Can't wait to come back.More

Had heard great things about Watervale and was keen to check it out. The fit out and design is amazing. Keeping the original stone work and turning into a modern feel works wonderfully...loved the atmosphere and general feel...we selected a wine and the waiter was...very attentive pouring a small amount into my glass to try before filling both glasses.. but he then put the bottle on the table, I had to ask someone else for an ice bucket to put the wine in...only minor but it's these tiny details that would turn it from very good to excellent. We then chose from the menu and as the menu is designed for sharing we selected about 8 dishes which turned out to be the perfect amount. We wanted to start with the bread with the house churned butter. We have run out of bread, we were informed. I don't think I've ever been to a restaurant that has run out of bread...the dishes we ordered were all fantastic with nothing to really complain about at all. I thought they were all well priced and portion size is what I would have expected. Until dessert arrived....we decided to order the almond cake, which was amazing. This came with a caramel sauce and ice cream and was really lovely. The other dessert we opted for was the house made mint slice biscuits...they were the size of a 10c piece and there were 2 just placed on a tiny white plate...nothing else with it, just two little morsels of biscuit on a stark white plate....could almost have forgiven the size if they were good but after all the amazing savoury dishes this was a real let down......almost perfect but a few minor details let it down.More

Clare, thankyou for your feedback. With regards to your three points of imperfection, we generally leave the bottles of white on the table without an ice bucket quite deliberately, particularly inside and during winter as the white wine emerges from the refrigerator one or two...More

History abounds in the Clare Valley which boasts tiny, sleepy little towns and up until recent times wineries happy just to produce an excellent drop and look after a visitor or two for a tasting. Times have changed rapidly however with wineries like Pikes now...offering first class tasting/restaurant facilities. O'Leary Walker can even cater for small conferences. Rather oddly, you have to go all the way to the township Clare to visit the regional tourist centre - odd because most of the tourist traffic comes from Adelaide. The heart of the charm of the region starts at Auburn (Clare is 24km away) and finishes at Sevenhill - the entire journey on Australia’s historic winery highway only takes a bit more than an hour. The historic town of Mintaro and Martindale Hall, just 11km from Watervale, should also be on your itinerary. Our first stop after exploring Auburn was Taylors Wines where tasting an excellent range of wines is still free. Old pubs abound along the highway - the Watervale Hotel for instance opened in 1847. This classic stone watering hole has become the symbol of the valley’s tourism resurgence - millions have been spent turning it into a first class restaurant and outdoor dining area. The architect has been very sympathetic to the original property using exposed stone where possible. It really is very impressive. We were seated in the private dining room with its own fireplace off the main entrance - a delightful surprise and celebrated with a bottle of Jim Barry The Nancy Sparkling Pinot Noir · 2021 - an excellent choice. The menu is quite extensive (perhaps a little too adventurous - but more later). I ordered the scallops - three tiny examples served on small white plates. Not an inspired start but the chips were great along with the bread and smoked butter. My main was Korean style lamb ribs - all I can recall was the thickness of the fat. My friend had the prawns (entree size really although rated quite tasty) and the girls chose lamb shank. They looked like they had been on the plate for a while and the girls both commented on the fact that they were a bit cold and stringy. Finally, the bed of brown lentils did little to add to the attractiveness of the dish. So, no great win yet. The roast pumpkin and cauliflower side plates got the thumbs up along with the almond cake and truffles to finish. We had a few glasses of Mitchell Peppertree and then it was time for an after dinner liqueur - I asked for a Drambuie and my friend Frangelico. My request rated a blank stare - we don't have it here I was told. A few minutes later the Frangelico arrived in a half full whisky glass - it had been mixed with soda water. We reordered a Pedro Ximenez. More blank looks - so my wife went out to the bar and had to identify the bottle for the waitress. The final bill came to $331 for four. My suggestion is for a much smaller, easier to perfect menu - we were at Pikes' Slate Restaurant the next day and thoroughly enjoyed both food and service.More

Ian, I am disappointed that your experience at the Watervale Hotel was not to your expectations or our usual standards. I suspect you were not well guided through the selection as the lamb ribs and prawns are both smaller, entre dishes. Our wine list is...More

We visited The Watervale Hotel with a pack of friends and were overjoyed and astounded by the ambience, the hospitality, 'Frankie' the mascot (quite possibly THE cutest AND happiest dog on Mother Earth)...and the sublime dishes presented to our table. Thank you, Warrick and Nicola,...for the sheer simplicity, elegance, and beauty exhibited in everything you 'do'. The place has been transformed and has an absolute 'WOW' factor ~ enormously appreciated. Do not leave without trying the scallops. Each guest was enamoured with the dishes they chose, but the chicken and barramundi were an absolute delight. Go. Get There. Make the trip to The Wjatervale Hotel ~ a little bit of heaven for your mouth...AND for your soul. We were given a tour, too, and ventured into The Hell Hole - private room for functions. This place will rock into Spring and Summer and the indoor dining looked full on a Monday evening. AMAZING. REMARKABLE. WELL DONE and Thank You Both. Patricia Gordon-Stevens ~ Kapunda, SAMore

We hired e bikes and cycled along the reasling trail to this lovely spot. We had read prior information and all recommended this place to eat. It was well worth the trip. From the outside you think what a quaint little pub and then you...are led through to the new renovations inside. Fantastic spot. Our lunch was delicious and we all left afterwards really impressed.
