We are at this restaurant twice during our five day trip to Amsterdam. Food was very very good, and the service was friendly and prompt. The atmosphere is quaint and homey. We also ate here in 2015, and enjoyed it so much we knew this restaurant would be on our list of eateries again this year. Excellent in every way!

This place is unusual to eat well. You have to be passionate and wait a bit more than normal. No hard menus. Worth it!!!

One of those little gems you stumble upon occasionally. Very friendly small place, very popular with locals. Great food, great beers and wines. Well worth finding for an easy going lunch.

Popped in for lunch. Had to wait a bit at the small bar as all tables were full but it was worth it. Van Kerkwijk serves hearty food (soup and sandwiches) and has a small wine menu. Our server was very friendly and I would happily recommend the place.

We found this place on TA and it was fantastic. The restaurant is quite small so best to arrive early as it soon fills up. There are no menus to peruse as the waiters discuss each option with you, which was a nice touch actually. The food was fantastic but also interesting. For example my steak was served with goats... When we arrived arrived the place was crowded therefore the waitress asked us to wait and we took a good beer and a wine. When the table was ready the chef gave us his suggestions according to our tastes. We had a really good dinner with two starters and main dishes.. and an homemade chocolate cake! Recommended!

This is my second time here and I absolutely love this place. The friendly atmosphere twinned with the exceptional food make this place a must on any visit to Amsterdam. The staff are funny and always attentive. It's an unpretentious well thought out concept and one which others could well do to emulate....We will be back

Had dinner here at the recommendation of our hotel concierge. There is no menu, it changes, so the waitress will verbally explain what your choices are. The muscles were fantastic. The steak with strawberry sauce was *ok*. Of course prices are not listed anywhere that I saw and they were not mentioned, so if you're looking to eat on a... More

So very glad we chose this restaurant for our last evening in Amsterdam. The understated decor showed the gorgeous food and the extremely accomplished waitresses off to perfection. As someone who has done the job, trust me when I say it takes skill and charm, of which these two women have in abundance, to pull off what they do when... More

Description
Van Kerkwijk, situated at the Nes 41 just behind Dam square, is a classic Amsterdam cafe and restaurant where you can eat and drink from early in the morning till late in the evening. Van Kerkwijk sisters have chosen a personal approach. That's why a menu doesn't exist and your options are presented at the table by your waiter.

Van Kerkwijk stands for quality food and drinks in an urban atmosphere. Characteristic, easy going, value for money. You feel at home between the regular customers who keep returning for the varied menu and the relax atmosphere.

Van Kerkwijk doesn't take reservations, walk in for a table or wait at the bar with a good beer or wine.

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
