The place is a bit far from the attractions but worth it for the cost benefit. They always have a combined entree + main course + wine glass for a fair price, about EU$ 11 for everything. The service was ok, it was very crowded even though it was already late for lunch, around 2 pm. the waiters seemed a... More

You know a place is a success when local Florentines are patrons. For 13 to 15 Euros per person you get a choice of 2 main plates and a salad with a large glass of wine or a bottle of water. The food was excellent, the pastas were aldente, the sauces superb and of particular note their grilled chicken breast... More

The food was amazing and the price is unbelievable. The pastas were delicious and the house wine was great. My advice is to get there early!

What. A. Lunch. We chose the restaurant for a pure chance: best choice ever! The place doesn't look posh at all: rather a fast food restaurant. But food was just incredible: top quality and unbelievably low price. We had serious troubles to leave the chairs after the lunch, and we "just" ordered from two set menus. Strongly recommended: thank you!

Had 3 meals at this place trying all the different dishes including bistecca ala Fiorentina, Tripes, beef stew and even sausages and beans. All very tasty and all part of set menus at a fantastic price!

We were told of this local gem by our landlord, and we're glad that we paid them a visit. A 3 course dinner with water was only 13.5 euros, absolute bargain compared to most Italian restaurants, and the food was surprisingly good. From various pastas to grilled beef or roasted rabbit, everything was tasty. The only thing I'd pick a... More

A true gem in Florence. With only 12 euros per person we enjoyed three dishes, wine and water. Everything delicious, also the desert, additonally 4 euros, very tasty. Highly recommended.

Went on local recommendation. Had the fixed price menu at dinner. Big meal for us. Home-style, traditional offering but huge flavors. Loved it.

The place was really nice and cosy, really felt as italian as it could be. Food was great, except for a few bones in my swordfish. I would stick to their pasta which is amazing!

Never underestimate the possibility of finding a good inexpensive meal in Florence. There are many attractive places that offer a lunch for E10. A favorite is Cento Poveri reviewed earlier. This time friends took us to Il Contadino which offered a choice of 2 courses and a side from a long and tempting menu including wine and water for E10.... More

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
