Off the usual tourist track this is a vibrant local restaurant frequented as much by locals as tourists. It is not large and hence appears permanently busy but is a 'must do' if you prefer something different to the usual tourist menu.

We came for lunch on our 11 mile circuit of Venezia. This a place our host has liked for a long time, especially for its seafood specialities which is the speciality of Venice. The bad news about that is that eating vegetarian is a bit of a challenge. Al Mariner did have a mushroom pasta, some salads, a cheese plate... More

Recommended by our tour guide, we had one starter between us, a main meal with 1 side each, a bottle of water & 1/2 litre of house red. Cost inc. service was €54. This is a lot but every meal in Venice is expensive. Food was fresh not reheated, very tasty and the wine was gorgeous. The restaurant has a... More

Had to wait a short time for a table as we hit this place at 1 o'clock. Staff were very friendly and most helpful. Fantastic mixed fish antipasti followed by salted cod. Great way to spend a leisurely lunch, seemed popular with locals and was off the more popular tourist route.

The staff in this place are friendly and the seafood menu has something for everyone, but in reality the food was nothing amazing. This is good for a cheap eat, but don't expect anything incredible.

We had just arrived (somewhat late) and wanted a quick lunch before embarking on sight-seeing in Venice. Al Marinar seemed to offer the typical Italian staples (a bowl of pasta) with no fuss or pretension. This proved to be the case, I had the spaghetti alla vongole, whole my companions had the ragu, it was all washed down with a... More

We were staying near this restaurant and as we passed by called in to book a table for the following evening. When we turned up we we're shown into a side room no more than 4m by 3 m no windows and the tables were very small. There were places set for about 20 people so very cramped. The food... More

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
