My favorite thing to do in Venice was scope out those local non-touristy restaurants that help you soak in the culture. Look no further. Stumbled upon this place one morning within the neighborhood our Air BnB was located. Each morning we would get pastries from here for 1€ - filled with apple or chocolate. Decided to come back for dinner... More

A lovely little family trattoria. Our Airbnb host recommended it and we loved it. Its located in a little square away from the hustle and bustle, amongst (presumably) an area dominated by locals. It was just great sitting back watching the locals actually. A nice change from all of the tourists. :) The food was good. I had the fish... More

We stumbled across this delightful trattoria on our way back from visiting San Pietro di Castello. It is hidden away in a residential area of Venice and is about as tourist free as you can hope to find in Venice. The food is authentic Venetian food with little concession to non-Venetian habits or tastes. Definitely the place to visit if... More

On our first full day in the city we were looking for a place to eat lunch. We were greeted by the loveliest waitress who gave us a menu in English. The food looked good so we sat down and had lunch. The service was quick and the food was delicious and very reasonably priced. We weren't ripped off or... More

Great little place, an oasis in Venice. So quiet and the beer was great on really hot day. Good value too, been ripped off in other places but this is for locals. Worth a visit from the chaos all around.

This little tratoria is in a quaint and almost deserted piazza only a block or so from our hotel. I was thrilled to see bigoli in salsa on the menu sign outside and decided to go for it. Bigoli in salsa is a traditional dish from Venice made with pasta, onions and sardines or anchovies. I loved it!

After having a long walk along the Grand Canal we turned left over a bridge and after asking some handsome naval officers if they knew of somewhere to eat in the area, they directed us to this little gem! A pasta with scampi and asparagus was recommended and tasted as good as it sounded. Some delicious red and white wine... More

Looked like a nice local restaurant. We ordered drinks asked for the menu and then were ignored by waiters who served multiple other tables. Left without eating...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
