This place has to be the best value in Venice. The place was so busy there was outside standing only, but well worth it and a little different.

My husband & I were looking for some delicious, inexpensive food after arriving by train in Venice & this place was recommended to us. Once we were there, we knew it must be good because it was crowded by people only speaking Italian. Tomato & cheese sandwich was perfect. We plan to break one of our eating out on vacation... More

Located near Piazzale Roma, it is a Mini Hostaria servicing few types of the typical Venetian snacks called cicchetti. Mini sandwiches with delicious different types of salami or prosciutto, and wines by the mini glass. All is mostly priced around 1€. All is fresh if not even instant prepared. Services is very basic but honest and polite. Prepare to queue... More

Came at opening time. No sandwiches were prepared yet so I came back in an hour. It was great for €1.60 for a small bite to eat and a small glass of red wine. Owner speaks English.

This cute little corner bar was heaving when I walked by. I thought this many people can't be wrong! I ordered a glass of Prosecco and a beef mini sandwich for a total of €1.90! I thought I misheard when he told me the price. I had already had lunch, but wish I hadn't as there was loads of sandwiches... More

We came across this bar by accident and we went back every lunchtime during our stay and even had a quick visit on the way to the airport the day we left! Absolutely amazing place and great to eat and drink with the locals. Fabulous fresh bread, the mortadella and ham rolls were delicious, plenty of other choice available. What... More

In our previous visit to Venice we skipped this place but this time we visited after we read a lot of comments here. The place is mainly ideal for a short stop while walking in Venice . The wines are very cheap and there are various choices. (around 1-2 euro per glass) . The paninis with mortadella and ham were... More

This is not a restaurant but a super, busy, tiny bar by a canal. Drinks at bottom drawer prices-60 cents for a small glass of Chardonnay or 90 cents for a similar size Prosecco. Small, but very tasty, snacks €1 each. Stop off here, see how the locals, and some tourists, live and enjoy the ambiance.

Such delicious and fresh food. One sandwich is 1€ and one small glass of wine or beer is 1€. I don't love this place because it's cheap, I love it because it's ingenious, full of life and so scrummy. Definitely go here if you don't mind standing or sitting on the water front.

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.
