I wonder if its against the law for a restaurant in Italy to offer horrible wine.. the food we ordered was also pathetic. The restaurant is understaffed so the service is very slow. A strict no if you are in Venice

I was on my way to another restaurant that had been recommended but couldn't get in and came across Alla Strega. Had I read the reviews before I entered, I would not have, however, I am so glad I didn't check them out. A large restaurant and very busy, however, the service was excellent. A great fish antipasta - one... More

We were walking about with ten people and needed to grab a quick bite near our apartment. The pizza was ok.. fresh dough and ingredients.

One single fact destroyed our good initial impression of this pizzeria completely: the stuff allows guests to feed their dogs directly at the table and give them a sit in the chair as if an animal were a human! There was no sorry after our remark that such behaviour is not compatible with the declared function of the place! We... More

Venice is not a place where you will find many places that offer take out. Our traveling party included our ten-month old grandson, so we opted to eat in the apartment one evening. The alla Strega happened to be a block away, so we gave it a shot. Great choice! The pasta was the best we found on our entire... More

Our first meal in Venice. The pizza was quite interesting (ham, frankfurters, mushrooms, and white asparagus) and average to good, but not great. Service was good. However, it was the ambience sitting in the quiet outdoor garden patio with grape vines providing protection from the sun and enjoying pizza and beer that made it well worth the visit. Charming!

We found this place by chance while wondering around Venice. It is away from the main streets and had quite a few locals inside, so we decided to give it a try. We didn't feel very welcomed as foreigners. The food generated mixed reactions: my pizza was good, but my girlfriend's codfish with polenta made her sick for a couple... More

I do not recommend it, the food was heated several times, burned, it tasted bitter, the cicchetti were really low quality abd the waitres quite rude. I really disliked the place we left our food on the place and so did another customer next to us

In Venice when you find somewhere where locals outnumber tourists you're onto a winner. Kids will love the witch theme and the variety of kids pizzas. The Strega Pazza pizza was excellent. Wife had a seabass which was good and cooked to order. Attentive service. Family friendly. Highly recommended.

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
