My husband and I are foodies, and we don't hesitate on spending money when we talk about food or wine. We usually go for it and enjoy the experience. But what was our surprise in Perlora. We asked the waiter to surprise us, to recommend us what to eat and let him worried about that and the result was paying... More

No pretentious "foam" on the menu here. Just fresh, delicious food served in reasonable portions. Not cheap but worth it. Excellent food and service. We ordered a bottle of wine, seafood starters, seafood main courses, dessert and dessert wine. Everything was excellent and the service was great.

We had a late Xmas eve lunch here, full of locals, great seafood, rare wines, excellent service provided by Mino. Not inexpensive, but memorable and superlative.

Once of the best meals and meal experiences we can remember. Absolutely superb fish and simple traditional preparations; the octopus was off the charts. I not only would go back but would add Madrid to a Spain itinerary for this place alone. Wonderful host, who clearly is passionate about his food and his restaurant. We learned all about Galatia as... More

Well - it was certainly an experience. The maitre d' (owner?) was an effusive cross between Basil Fawlty and Uriah Heep, explaining every detail of every dish and wine in a Spanish at the pace of a fast river. No English, so I kept up as best as I could. Each explanation with a little nod or bow, and then... More

This is a restaurant where the staff takes pride in the quality and provenance of the food, and the experience of the customers. The fish entrees were superb, as were the starters and oysters. Yes, it is more costly than the average place in lavapies, but the value is present through every course. I would return when visiting Madrid. If... More

The quality of the stuff they serve here is very high, so always ask the waiter for price when accepting a suggestion. I do not think they are trying to rip off anyone, it is just the quality is high. As an example, we paid 88 EUR for 4 langoustines (cigalas). they were 110 eur/kg and those 4 weight 880... More

We used to go several times a year. We could be considered one of the regulars, but we won't come back again. The meals have a very good quality. They are not cheap, but expensive, but the quality may justify the price. We want to warn over waiter suggestions. Be very careful. We know that the price of most of... More

When you go in don't be put off by the music - a mash up of Queen, the Animals and Andrew Lloyd Webber - it's all part of the charm. Lots of locals in the tapas at the front and a mix of locals and tourists at the back. It is small so you have to book. The quality of... More

Staying in Lavapies

Neighbourhood Profile
Lavapies
Walking into this neighbourhood is like entering a different country ... except it's hard to tell which one it is. One side of Calle Lavapiés is lined with Indian restaurants, the other with kebab shops. Men in traditional African clothing convene outside their businesses for long chats, and people shout to each other across plazas and streets. Interspersed among ethnic specialty shops are independent theaters and dance studios, and two large arts and cultural centers — the beautiful Casa Encendida and the Tabacalera, a former tobacco factory — all of which attract young crowds. Along Calle Argumosa, the place to go for drinks, artists and art appreciators with piercings and dreadlocks convene in the street’s eclectic array of young, hip bars. Though some of the side streets can get a little seedy at night, Lavapiés is still the place to go for those seeking a unique blend of arts and culture in an international and funky neighbourhood.
