We visited Melo's last night and had a great meal. Really enjoyed the sandwich and croquettes. The best part though was the incredibly friendly staff. There was a huge line and crowd in the restaurant but that didn't impact their mood poorly at all! The man in charge behind the counter was very patient with our order despite our slowly... More

Every Spaniard I met boasted about their mum's croquetas and ranked them as the best in the world... But every Spaniard I met in this packed-to-the-brim café admitted Melo's croquetas were done just as the ones they remembered from their childhood. The ones you no longer get any more any where else... Not even at home! As soon as I... More

We arrived just before 9 pm and this place was already getting crowded. We ordered the morcilla, zapatilla, and croquetas, and we were not disappointed! It's great for a casual meal and typical Spanish experience. Also, it was very reasonably priced for all of the food and drinks, we paid under 20 Euros! I would definitely recommend this to anyone... Husband and I heard of its awesomeness and showed up at quarter past 8pm on a Friday night - already packed! We were lucky to sit at the bar. Ordered croquetas and a full zapatilla to split - we were struggling by the end!! It was really delicious and the staff are my heroes. It thinned out around 9pm so... More

Popped in late night for the famous zappatilla and was not disappointed. It's a beast and was probably the best €7 I spent in Madrid. Will be back again in 2 weeks

This place knows what it does best and does it well. They have a small menu but the food is great. The croquetas were delicious and the zapatillas are enormous.

This place has been open for years and has a kind of cult following. In order to get a seat you have to get there early as it gets crowded. The menu is small but everyone more or less goes there for the homemade croquettes, and the "zapatillas" which are kind of very large hunks of crusty bread filled with... More

Small and crowded place with a lot of local people. I ate half Zapatilla and couldn't it more for about two days! And it was delicious!

I started with a Jamon croquette which was good. It was a mistake as I then tried their famous Zapatilla sandwich ham and cheese sandwich with big chunks of ham. Even the half order is larger than any full sandwich I'd order anywhere else. And its super cheap. I managed to finish it but I was way too full. After... More

Neighbourhood Profile
Walking into this neighbourhood is like entering a different country ... except it's hard to tell which one it is. One side of Calle Lavapiés is lined with Indian restaurants, the other with kebab shops. Men in traditional African clothing convene outside their businesses for long chats, and people shout to each other across plazas and streets. Interspersed among ethnic specialty shops are independent theaters and dance studios, and two large arts and cultural centers — the beautiful Casa Encendida and the Tabacalera, a former tobacco factory — all of which attract young crowds. Along Calle Argumosa, the place to go for drinks, artists and art appreciators with piercings and dreadlocks convene in the street’s eclectic array of young, hip bars. Though some of the side streets can get a little seedy at night, Lavapiés is still the place to go for those seeking a unique blend of arts and culture in an international and funky neighbourhood.
