This place is an "institution" in Madrid. It's renowned nationwide. And it does have amazing "chocolate + churros" (sticks of fried batter you dunk in think hot chocolate). My only gripe is that they could have revamped the café, in its day, more classier or tasteful. It's not bad but has more of an icecream parlour feel than the "institution"... More

If you're on a diet this is not the place for you.But give yourself a treat and enjoy this fantastic sweet snack. The chocolate sauce is divine-thick,creamy and not sickly sweet. We made time for a second visit on our last day it was so good.

We stumbled onto this place and what a wonderful treat. We were able to enjoy delicious churros that you dip into a cup of delicious melted chocolate. I loved sitting outside so I was able to enjoy my treat and people watch at the same time!

You can enjoy the most popular breakfast in Old Madrid nightlife: delicious "churros" and "porras" different makes of Deep fried and crusty pastry with hot chocolate or café au lait.though it is customary to queue up and wait for this delicacy. They are not sweet, but composed of wheat flour and fried in olive oil. You shouldn't miss it while... More

If you think "chocolate" is cocoa, you are sorely misinformed. The real chocolate (not the Spanish urban dictionary definition) is melted from a solid bar and served piping hot to be eaten with a spoon or for dipping some other baked or fried sweet (croissant, churro, whatever). There is nothing like it and San Ginés is one of -- if... More

There isn't an instruction manual for this place - but queue and order first before asking staff for a table. There's seating outside and in the downstairs room. For the 4 of us, we ordered two portions of churros and one chocolate sauce (which was ultra thick and rich) and that was just nice for us, and drinks. All in... More

The atmosphere and the service were super quick and truly appreciated, since the place was crowded. They don't have the best churros in town by far, though the experience is one of the best I have ever had in Madrid eating chocolate&churros.

We skipped dessert in the restaurant to head to San Gines for a portion of churros (you get 6 churros in 1 portion) and a cup of chocolate each to dunk them in. They also give out free glasses of water Best decision we ever made!

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
