After seeing the picture window facing the plaza full of sweet delights, I had to go inside. They have a wide variety of cookies, chocolates, merengues and other sweet eats. I bought 2 each of 4 different cookies. Everyone I (we) ate back in my hotel room left me wishing I had bought more.

I love the Merengue from La Colmena. They are just great. Coffee , chocolate, lemon,... I cannot say which one is better. 😋

Since the sweets was yummy last time in this shop, we went there to get some of candies. Their taste is simple and not too sweet. Can't wait to get some soon!!!

The sweets here must come directly from heaven and be it in the afternoon or any other time the day: a stop here is mandatory to grab some of the precious delicateties offered here genuinely handmade and sold with pride.

I chose 5 kinds of Marzipans and they were very tasty, a few were very unique. The place is in the placa, but the full name is on the side, in the street around the corner.

Whenever I come to barcelona my first visit is here to have a tasty bocadillo (French bread with cheese or ham or the typical Spanish chorizo sausage) and this heavenly ametlla sweets . One of the best pastelerias in the world and I ve seen many.

I went to this place thinking it was the best bakery in town due to all the raving comments but in the reality it is a very small place, yes has good products however not as expected. In Barcelona there are far more beautiful and bigger bakeries than this one. It took us big effort to find it too.

Best sweets....the macaroons were wonderful, and if you love meringues!! I took one home to the hotel but wanted to have one of their yummy macaroons with a coffee....as we had had a big day on the hop on hop off bus....and the pastry shop, although selling coffee, did not have seating....the lovely lady actually suggested that we buy our... Description
La Colmena is one of the oldest cake shops in Barcelona. For more than a century it has delighted "Placa de l'Angel" square, where it is located, with it's fragrant aroma of home-made candies and cakes. The exact date it was founded is unknown, but we do know that its original name was "Ca l'Abella". In 1849 Rosendo Abella had the shop in the street "Bajada de la carcel" (the prison slope) now called "Baixada de la Llibreteria" (Bookshop slope), situated just in front of the current location. In 1872, the Costa family purchased the business, moved to the current location and changed the name to La Colmena. But maintained both names at the front of the building. Later, the shop changed owners from "Morato i Sant Pera" in 1912 to "Chocolates J. Camps" in 1921. Finally, in 1927, Josep and Francesc Roig Manubens bought the business which is now run by the grandson, Josep Maria Roig. Toni Roig, Francesc's great-grandson and Josep Maria's son, makes the candies following the same recipes and methods centuries ago, like many other traditional Catalan pastries and cakes
