I visit Berlin for work and this was first time I stopped by at this place to eat and realised what I had been missing on in all my previous visits! In my last visit to the city, I stopped by at Johnny's for Gluh wine (which was fantastic too). It's a lovely, cozy cafe with a neat and small... More

Cracking beers and nachos. Great staff and just all round fun. It's not fine dining but loved it as a pit stop prior to our first day of exploring.

We were on a short visit to Berlin with friends and two 12 year olds. After a tour of the city, we went in this little gem that I found on tripadvisor. We were greeted with the warmest smile ever and had probably the best ever home cooked chicken nachos we've ever tasted. It was perfect! Friendly, homely, warm and... More

Popped in for a drink and a bit of lunch, had the east German spicy soup and a beer/coffee. All was very nice and reasonably priced, staff friendly as well.

We stopped by Johnny's Bar during our December visit to Berlin and had a very good and affordable lunch here. Johnny's Bar is located on Zimmerstrasse very near to Checkpoint Charlie. Opening Hours are 10am to 7pm (Sun-Thurs) and 10am to 9pm (Fri-Sat). During our visit, we tried their chicken wrap (€5.90) which was well made with fresh ingredients and... More

Staying in Kreuzberg

Neighbourhood Profile
Kreuzberg
Berlin's revolutionary heart and immigrant roots can both be found in Kreuzberg, but this central neighbourhood is beginning a new chapter. In the 1950s and '60s, Turkish guest workers settled around Kottbusser Tor, while in the 1980s and '90s, rambunctious squatters and artists gathered to live a carefree life here. An old hospital even became a hotspot of riots between squatters and police. Today you can still find the best kebabs in town and many underground clubs, but a lot has changed as well. The hospital has been transformed into an art center, and increasingly you will find new urban cafés, restaurants and designer shops. Rising housing prices and gentrification threaten the spirit of this area along the Spree River, but the neighbourhood’s legacy is upheld by a very engaged community fighting to preserve its rebellious identity.
