From California, I've eaten Mexican food my whole life (the real stuff, not Taco Bell). We won't go back. 1. The chips and salsa were corn tortilla chips, squirted with a very watery sauce, topped with a generous dollop of crema and a load of homemade chopped pickles. Pickles. Really strange. 2. I asked the server if I could have... More

Being an American from Texas, I felt quite at home going to a speakeasy located behind a functioning taqueria. Unfortunately, I was still too full to try a taco. That place was certainly cramped but the drinks truly were quality. I love a good tequila or mezcal cocktail and I was not disappointed. Great for a quick hop in and... More

So after reading some reviews and also reading a article about where the locals go, we gave the place a shot. The taco restaurant in front is really really small and keeping with this theme so are the portions. For 13 Euros or about $16 you got a bowl of black bean soup , a piece of belly pork, some... We took a "cocktails only" respite from Holiday shopping in this mysterious and utterly seductive watering hole which has lived up to its reputation. The grotto like ambiance, in the early evening hours, was irresistably inviting. We each ordered a different cocktail from their selection and our expectations were surpassed. Yes, the place was crowded but it was the human... More

13€ for one cocktail ... for me is too expensive.... yes , the local is nice, the ambient is suggestive, but the price of drinks are too high... I believe .

Another great example of the up-and-coming cocktail scene in Paris. They are a little behind (London, NYC, San Fran, Shanghai, etc) but they are coming on strong with the next level of excellent cocktail bars. Loved Candelaria!

Besides the fun part of the hidden bar behind a random door of a very basic taqueria, the candelaria has really great cocktails but a quite short list of signature ones. Overall get there early to have a spot otherwise you will stand in the crowd. Always a nice stop.

The smallest restaurant / eatery in the neighbourhood serves delicious small dishes of Mexican food at an incredibly high pace. Make sure to not miss the Margarita. Not the place for you if you like a lot of space.

If you happen to be there before 5pm, make sure to taste the magnificent tacos with the even crazier hot saues. It's okay to start off with a beer before you enter the bar and have the creative cocktails from the menu or some sexy mezcales.

Staying in Le Marais

Neighbourhood Profile
Le Marais
The Marais is a winding maze of multi-faceted streets that beg to be explored. It bursts with small boutiques, historic buildings, cozy traditional restaurants, and hidden parks. Around each corner, you'll come across little gems of architecture spanning the centuries, from understated medieval towers to classical libraries and 17th century splendour. This neighbourhood unites a rich mix of people of all ages, but it's best known for the gay scene mostly in the south and the Jewish community around Rue des Rosiers.
