We decided last week on a Friday afternoon long lunch, over a bottle of wine. We were looking for a slow paced afternoon to dine in, what better place to go in the city. Booked in advance to be sure as La Cave can be busy. We sat downstairs, always cosy & a relaxed atmosphere. There were a few ppl & ourselves so the vibe was good. ( The Covid situation was addressed in all aspects, everyone felt comfortable ) We had two starters, salad & onion soup, both were tasty as you'd expect. Mains were John Dory fish & lamb cutlets. Cooked perfectly and accompanied by delicious tasty veg. We have been to La Cave many times over the years. Its been open a long long time and for good reason. Friendly staff, great wine list & dinner has always been great / good value, particularly for the city. Its ideal for daytime lunch & evening dinner. The owners take great pride, its run like a restaurant unlike many other pop up eateries / restaurants these days. May La Cave continue their success for many more years to come.....

Have been here several times for both dinner and lunch. The food is very reasonably priced for Dublin, particularly if you go for one of the set menus. The set menus offer a better choice of dishes than many restaurants' full à la carte, and the à la carte here is more extensive again. The dishes are mainly traditional French fare and the quality of the food is excellent. In a city with its fair share of disappointing restaurants, La Cave is a long-established spot where you can be confident of a meal you'll enjoy. Great wine selection too (including fortified wines by the glass) and it continues as a wine bar in the late evenings after food service has finished. Highly recommend.

What an experience! The best meal I've had since I can remember. Excellent food, excellent wines, excellent service - I can't recommend it enough. And if you make it to the early bird service, it is ridiculously affordable for such a fantastic meal.

Had table for four booked for 5.45pm on December 19th 2022. Booked it months ago and specified that we needed to be leaving the restaurant no later than 7.30pm to get to a nearby concert which was beginning at 8pm. Table wasn't ready until 6.05pm. Service was too slow. Starters didn't arrive until 6.30pm. A fairly bland goats cheese and likewise for a prawn cocktail. Mains arrived at 7pm. Seabass was good but Turkey dish was swimming in gravy. During all this waiting there was no communication with the table service. I spoke to the waitress at 7.15pm and reminded her about our need to be gone by 7.30pm. we order three deserts. Two yule logs which were like stale, dry chocolate cake. a creme brulee came that was cold and soggy. I did complain about the food and the service but no response was forthcoming. We have been regulars here for many years and always enjoyed it. After our experience I would definitely not be returning any time soon. They seemed to be more interested in leaving people at the table once they were ordering plenty of wine! I did email La Cave but got no reply.

I have been a patron of La Cave for over 20 years, though mostly at lunchtimes. Knowing that the restaurant advertised itself as being open until 2 a.m., one evening (30 November to be precise) my companion and I decided to visit the restaurant for drinks . We arrived there just before 10.30 pm, at the same time as two other people who were strangers to us. The restaurant although well patronised was not full. My companion ordered two drinks for us. The two strangers did likewise. Immediately afterwards, a portly, mustachioed middle- aged man, who claimed to be the manager, suddenly appeared and brusquely told us that the restaurant was closed and demanded that we leave, even though our orders had been taken and the existing patrons were continuing with their conversations and drinks. He gave no reason for his rude behaviour but he made it clear that we had no choice but to leave.

This is a gem of a restaurant. Very cosy with lovely atmosphere. We all had the same main course which was simply delicous. The waiter couldn’t have been more charming and polite. The problem came with one of the starters ordered. Avocado mousse with prawn cocktail and smoked salmon. We noticed before eating it that the avacado mousse was missing and questioned the waitress about it…her reply was simply yes it is missing. It was replaced by 2 small slices of avacdo. We then realised the smoked salmon was also missing …..the answer to that was yes, sorry, I’ll knock a couple of euros off the bill. We made it clear we didn’t really think that was enough since we’d not have ordered the dish had it simply been prawn cocktail. She told us she couldn’t reduce the price anymore and we ought not to have eaten the prawns if we weren’t happy!! We would have returned to this restaurant but felt the customer service was not good at all…in fact I’d call this waitress ‘rude’. Such a shame .

I hate writing bad reviews, but in this case there were enough issues that I think it's warranted. The lamb shank was not braised sufficiently. It was flavourful but tough. It took way more work than a well-braised shank should. (which is no work at all). The tart tartin was, I think, more like an American pie than anything a self-respecting French chef would produce. The crust was soggy and it didn't look like it was constructed like a proper tartin. It was actually a little heart breaking. In short, it was not French.

Returning after a few years our night was everything we hoped it would be. We were desperate to come back here and were once again treated to an intimate atmosphere, warm and welcoming service and then there is the food.... Oh my, the food! We had decided on our order pre arrival such was our excitement to return to La Cave, soup, muscles, filet steak and rack of lamb before cheeses... it was a good thing we had agreed to share before arriving, because after that first mouthful you wouldn't be for sharing anything! Cannot say enough how awesome this place is! Will always make a point of going back!

I booked La Cave for a special occasion with my sisters. We had all been there before, both in the restaurant and for wine tasting. We were upstairs which was beautiful. We ordered our wine.. when the waiter arrived he produced a bottle of white wine, not the one we had ordered(but similar) and proceeded to open it. When I asked why he brought us that one he made some excuse about not having the original choice- but hadn’t told us this so that we could choose another. After some toing and frowing we got the wine menu and ordered another similar white wine. Then he came back saying he had it but it wasn’t chilled. At this point we asked him to just stick it in a bucket of ice and we’d take it from there. This was done(we felt) begrudgingly. The wine, when chilled was delicious, as was the food! The other servers were pleasant and helpful. We were just a bit disappointed in the wine waiters attitude in what is known for being a top class wine restaurant (and a favourite of ours!)

We are so pleased to have discovered this fine restaurant. We loved the onion soup and the prawn/avocado appetizers, and the coq au vin and the steak entrees. The tarte tatin was also a hit. The chocolate dessert was a bit less successful, but overall we were very pleased with our experience. Yes, it's in the basement, and, yes, it's tiny. But it's run in a very personal and charming way, and the food was quite lovely. Finally, I thought it was an excellent value.

By far my favourite place to dine! A beautiful French styled restaurant with equally beautiful food, always fresh and tasteful produce! The ambience created by staff and decor is just so welcoming and special. Try the French Onion soup!! Can’t wait to return!

I love the cozy atmosphere of the cellar. The wine selection is excellent. The traditional meals are quite good, at a very fair price given its central location. We were overall satisfied and will likely return again.

Hidden gem with old school charm. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience in this cozy traditional french restaurant. The wine list is huge with a price range to suit everyone’s budget. The food is fantastic and the early bird menu extremely reasonable.

Have been going here for years and I was so happy that it came back to us after lockdown . Always amazing food and a fabulous wine list. Tend to get a selection of starters as so tasty and try a different wine everytime . Service always excellent and treat you like friends not customers. P.s. if into oysters I recommend contacting in advance to book them!

Have been going there for years just to sample the wines but at 5pm today we dropped in to have a glass wine and the mature manager told us that they were full up, there were only about 4 people in the venue! We were very insulted as it was clear that we were not welcome for a drink, they obviously only want diners. Big mistake, will never return again.
