I went to the upstairs restaurant, quieter than the downstairs pub, it is spacious with waitress service, I had a three course lunch for £4-99 drink extra and thought it value for money !

if u want cheap eats this is the place very friendly staff and helpful u can either eat in the bar or go upstairs very busy it can be

Crowded place but very warm feeling and waiters. The classic Scottish pub. We had a well cooked dinner and had good drinks!

I understand that it is pretty busy on a Friday but you could try the royal Scot bar which is just a minute's walk from the horseshoe bar and there is a bar called the crystal palace you could try as well. Hope this helps.
