Have been to the Cafe Royal a number of times and never had a bad visit. Brilliant place, good beer, excellent food and attentive staff. The traditional Xmas Dinner was excellent and at £13 excellent value too.

It is just as well that this pub is hidden away behind other buildings as it is busy enough without all and sundry being able to find it! The bar is well stocked with real ale and there is a single malt whisky menu for those which a taste for the good stuff. The turkey roast I went for was... More

Spent a lovely evening here on a recent trip to Edinburgh, we went for drinks but saw people having the lobster and the mussels . Food looked excellent, we'll be back.

This is normally a good place to have a drink and get something to eat but I'm beginning to find that the food is getting a tad more expensive! I ordered the steak pie and mash and although the "pie" tasted ok the mash was very dry! It needed a lot of butter to make it palatable! £14 for my... More

I admit that cafe royal is one of my many favourites in Edinburgh but this is the first time I have dined in the restaurant. We were not disappointed. Full of character, quality fitments and a great history make this a great place to sit and enjoy a quality dinner. We enjoyed the early evening dinner, with my fish(Hake) cooked to perfection... More

It's classy, it's buzzing and there's great food and beer. What's not to like? This Edinburgh institution tucked away on a back street near The Balmoral is well worth seeking out.

Popped in yesterday on the way to the rugby at Murrayfield. 1110 and was already quite busy. I've been here a few times and just love the tiled walls each with a story to tell. Staff always friendly and efficient. Didn't eat this time but have done before, both in the bar and the restaurant and food is great, especially... More

I very rarely review a bad experience unless it was so bad that it warrants drawing attention to it. I love the Cafe Royal for its sale, its original interior, its food and its mix of clientele. I have been many times but this last visit was so bad I left. The rudeness of one of the staff was unpardonable.... More

In a city full of great pubs, The Cafe Royal is almost certainly the best. We went for our customary post-Murrayfield drink and, as always, the pub was packed to the rafters with a great atmosphere. The beer (I chose Inveralmond Lia Fail) was in superb condition and the 15 year old Bowmore was like the nectar of the gods.... More

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
