We came across Monteiths one night by accident, we saw the fairy lights and decided to see where they would take us. This place was amazing, the food and drinks were delicious and the staff were efficient and friendly. Best find in Edinburgh. Would definitely of back!

Great place for fine-dining in quite casual ambiance. Great menu, we loved the lamb, steaks and cheese as dessert together with Sherry.

Stumbled on this place when looking for an afternoon watering hole, quite busy but we found a comfy seat near the bar, gin cocktails followed 😍 also had some haggis balls and duck fat chips from the grazing menu, very nice. Onwards now refreshed and refuelled. Definitely recommend this place, but you will need to book a table.

We saw that the restaurant served seafood as we wanted Lobster so we booked a table for the following evening. The place is down in the basement off the Royal Mile and is very attractive with a nice atmosphere. We ordered Lobster although it was on a board and not listed on the menu and therefore no price indicated. When... More

Managed to get a table at lunchtime without pre booking which was lucky. It's not a huge place, however it seemed massively understaffed with only one waitress running back and forth. I asked about vegetarian options and was offered (among other things not listed on the menu) various risottos, which I chose. We waited the best part of an hour... More

Monteiths kitchen prides itself on using great quality ingredients that are locally sourced where possible. Provenance is hugely important and we work closely with our suppliers to ensure that our food comes from farm, to plate as quickly as possible. Although we frequently change our menu to reflect the changing seasons we also have a range of specials including dry aged fillet steaks and chateaubriand available. There is also a selection of seasonal dishes from the sea including fresh Scottish lobster and oysters

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
