This place, you guys, this place. An old storage area for grain above the shops along the shopping district. The atmosphere is cozy and romantic and since the walls are stone, they have REAL candles in the candelabra's on the wall, so the lighting is just beautiful. The service was top notch and the food was one of the BEST... More

Very good food. A little bit pricy but excellent quality/price. I went for the Gnocchi mainly which was excellent. Great atmosphere (wood, candles). Staff was welcoming and doing nice jokes. I strongly recommend.

We hadn't booked but were welcomed with open arms and led to a fine table. We were offered seconds of their home made bread, delicious! We only had a main course each, both opting for the pork loin and belly pork. So tender and full of flavour, a delight at each mouthful. Great location, atmospheric surroundings and just what we... We came here for dinner and barely got in so I suggest reservations. The restaurant is inside an old grain storage building so the stone walls add a nice local feel to the cozy atmosphere. We wanted to sample Scottish food so we tried the pigeon starter, the venison and the truffle gnocchi. All dishes had a wonderful presentation and... More

Visited on the basis of other recent reviews. Food very good indeed - especially the beef and venison main courses (the latter especially good). Service very attentive when we arrived early in the evening but it almost completely dried up by about 8.30 when the place was fuller. They are understaffed - only seemed to be two servers for the... After eating at Forage & Chatter on our first night in Edinburgh, I wasn't sure anywhere else would deliver food or service quite as good. I was wrong. Grain Store was a brilliant choice for our 2nd night! With great food, lovely wine (they even do half bottles for those mixing red meat dishes with fish/poultry) and excellent service, we... More

On a Saturday night, even during a quieter period and not the height of the tourist season, making a reservation a some of Edinburgh's top restaurants can be difficult...even with the assistance of a hotel concierge. We secured a 9 pm reservation and found the staff and kitchen overwhelmed. It took over an hour to receive our entree. Management apologized... More

Tucked away on a side street off the Royal Mile this restaurant was amazing. The service and food were fabulous. Loved the setting and intimacy of this restaurant. This was recommended by a local and can see why it was.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
