This restaurant was fantastic! When you arrive there are only about 8 tables in the restaurant, so it is a simple dining room but at the same time extremely warm and inviting! The service was excellent, kind and helpful. The food was more than fantastic. One of the best meals I've ever had!

We were visiting Edinburgh for 3 days, for Valentines and a birthday (mine), and really wanted to find an appropriate location for a special meal. We had wandered up and down the High Street a few times, and there are plenty of very nice cafes, pubs and bars - but very few restaurants. Unfortunately for Dubh Prais the frontage of... More

This is a very intimate restaurant, set opposite the Radisson Blu Hotel. Be sure to book as very limited space, the food was excellent and cooked well. The staff were friendly, if in central Edinburgh then a good choice as offers a very good alternative to the National restaurant chains.

Having already been once before for a special graduation meal, I knew surprising my other half with a birthday meal here would be a great idea. It isn't the cheapest of options, however, the small intimate setting and seasonal food are well worth paying for! Friendly staff and a lovely night - always somewhere that books up fast though so... We came here for a valentines meal on a trip to Edinburgh and had a really good meal, with great service and a fabulous atmosphere. The restaurant is small and down steps to the basement on the Royal Mile. All food is cooked to order and so the menu is quite obviously restricted as one would expect. The service was... More

My wife was a bit dubious about my selection of Dubh Prais for dinner, but both she and I were very pleased with service and meal we had. Helen described the Angus beef as some of the best beef she has ever had and my venison was also very good.

Passed by here many times but decided to have dinner there on the spur of the moment. We booked a table for an hour ahead. The restaurant is down a narrow stair and is small and intimate. The food was faultless (thanks Colin) and the waitress was knowledgeable and gave first class service. The chef creates his excellent food from... More

We have been going to this restaurant for at least 15 years and it never fails to disappoint. I will not get tired of either the atmosphere nor the food. Set in a small basement room on the Royal Mile, it would be easy to miss the entrance which is currently disguised by scaffolding - do not make this mistake.... More

Well what a fantastic meal we had at Dubh Prais. The food and service were both excellent and quite possibly the best meal I have had in a long time. Haggis starter was so good...quite a large portion. It is small which adds to the experience so I would advise to book. I will be back!!

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
