Popped in here whilst walking the royal mile. Was greeted straightaway by friendly staff. Was directed to indoor seating (only three tables). Had breakfast tea for two with a slice of carrot cake and a slice of raspberry cake. Very reasonably priced and would recommend if you like a quiet, quaint place.

I stopped in with three friends to fuel up with a quick, easy, and portable lunch on our way to climbing Arthur's Seat. We couldn't have been happier with the sandwiches we walked away with! My toasted smoked bacon on a roll was perfect, and I was happy that the kind and wise sandwich chef talked me out of putting... More

My sister and I stumbled upon this cafe when walking the royal mile. Although small it was a lovely little cafe with great coffee, cakes and food. Service was fantastic and the staff were super friendly. Would definitely go again!

I ordered lunch to be delivered to a meeting I was attending in Edinburgh. I have to say, the food was by far the best I've ever had at a meeting. Beautifully presented, great variety of sandwiches/rolls, including both vegan and vegetarian. Everything was so fresh and tasty. Also a beautiful fresh fruit platter. I will definitely use Sugarhouse Sandwiches... More

It's tiny and as a group of 6 we were lucky the one big table was vacated just after we arrived. A tray of fabulous looking (& tasting) cheese scones appeared. We were offered each of the soups to try. Nothing too much trouble for the lady and gentleman running the café. Delicious panini, scones, soup and sandwiches enjoyed by... More

Think the title gives it away. My girlfriend and I went into this establishment hoping that we would be able to get a sandwich to satisfy our hunger. My girlfriend requested a simple mozzarella and ham panini. To our surprise the owner said that he didn't have any mozzarella, he then told us that he didn't have any bread to... More

For us, "Fresh" means Artisan bread , baked that morning, chicken breast roasted by us , also that morning. All items on the shelf are prepared that day in our own kitchen, with pride. Perhaps your preferences might be better suited at one of the corporate fast-food sandwich bars. As for being "fleeced" , for two 20 cm artisan panini'... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
