We visited Kanpai on Friday evening and it was quite empty. We ordered about 5 dishes to start off with the aim of ordering more once we had ate our initial order. The food comes out as its made and this is fine as that is how it is, however we had only had 3 of our 5 dishes and... More

Wow some great food was eaten this night the Vulcan Sno Crab was a favourite dish, seafood was fresh and sushi was great ... only thing letting this place down was the very average quality of the service (slow, no one checking whether we wanted to order more etc..) which given the price of the food isn't really acceptable. Would... More

I've visited a few Sushi restaurants in Edinburgh but Kanpai was a lot more up market. The sushi is extremely well presented and the service top dollar. I started with the tuna, very tender and exquisitely flavoured. Then the aubergine- impossible to eat with chopsticks but tasty. Presentation very good, service excellent, taste outstanding. Whilst in Edinburgh we decided to try a Sushi meal and were recommended this place by several people and were not disappointed. The staff were very obliging as we hadn't booked a table, they fitted us in on condition we finished within the hour which we appreciated. The guy who took our order without a notepad had an amazing memory.... More

The staff were super attentive and friendly. Our food was fresh - delicious, beautifully presented. Great choice of music and the colour theme of the restaurant. The place looked neat and really clean - well done Kanpai staff!

This place is so good! Nice atmosphere, great service and the food is really tasty. It is quite expensive but I think that's pretty standard for sushi these days! Would recommend!

Food was pretty good, service not great, had to ask for things (glass of water) several times. Table positioning was terrible - felt like we were sat in a corridor - never end of people going past to toilet and kitchen - table wobbling each time. We did ask to be moved, but were told everything was booked up -... More

Very very good food. The selection is so huge we struggled to choose. Wanted to try everything. From the saké through the sashimi, followed by some well built sushi and finished with ice creams. There is plenty for everyone to choose. Back again in January and so excited already.

This is a lovely little restaurant, with friendly staff and tasty, fresh, and well presented food. The miso glazed aubergine is particularly special! It would be good to see more vegetarian choices though, theres not many different sushi rolls, and it would be great to have warm vegetable dishes like tempura, korroke, or gyoza. It's worth noting that this is... More

I went here for my wife's 30th with a group of friends, I was so impressed with the range of dishes not just sushi, the staff were friendly and even put up with us after a few too many sakis. The place has a great atmosphere, I'll be back

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
