I really like going to Cloisters as it has a really relaxing atmosphere with no loud music or tv, open fire and even board games if you want. To some this may sound boring but you can go there with a group of friends and actually enjoy conversation and really, really good beer. They have guest beers (cask and bottled)... More

Need I say more? Good range of real ales, fire in the winter, staff who know what they're doing. Sometimes difficult to get a place to sit down as it's so popular.

Dropped in to rendez-vous with friends for a pre-dinner drink and wished we could have stayed longer. A good selection of real ales from near and far, kept well and served with a smile.

Couldn't be happy with this pub as a local, lovely atmosphere, good food and great beers on tap. Will definitely be visiting a lot. Just please stock more interesting board games!!

Fantastic choice of Real Ales and served by staff who know what they are doing, know the product and why real ale drinkers come to this establishment. Brilliant. The double burgher was the best I've eaten and for a Edinburgh City pub it doesn't get any better. Why go any where else? I particularly liked seeing the positive response to... More

great atmophere, no music, just people chanting, socializing with one another, which makes it a great place, not to mention the outstanding (I guess typical for a scottish bar) selection of Ales, Lager, Single Malts etc.

One of the best if not the best cask ale led pubs in Edinburgh . Always a great of casks and are getting more independent keg beers in with 2 rotating guest keg lines ! Prices reasonable as well . Even better you have the full option of thirds up to pints !!!!! You get to choose

This bar has a great selection of beers that are well maintained. The price is reasonable and there's usually quite a nice ambience to enjoy a pint in.

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
