This is a pub we have frequented on and off for years. It offers a very good range of beers and spirits along with decent food at reasonable prices. Not haute cuisine but good for pub grub. Can be busy due to excellent location at peak times.

We visited on a Saturday afternoon. Most seats were taken with people eating and drinking. The seating was comfortable enough. The service was a little slow but the staff friendly. A group of friends went for cocktails however there wasn't a large variety to choose from. It's an easy place to find but whilst the interior is bright it has... More

The Shakespeare is a large pub serving traditional pub food. Fish and chips came as an enourmous portion, but it was not the best I had. However, it was ok for a quick low cost dinner.

Food was awful and way over priced. The atmosphere and location was great, so we went in for a bite to eat. The food was so bad that we could not eat it and left hungry. Don't be sucked in.... yuck.

...Drink! Great, rather large pub. Super friendly staff that are great to chat with. Fab selection of alcohol and its cozy inviting environment is perfect for meeting up with friends.

£3 for a cup of coffee and £6.50 for a dry cheese sandwich and luke warm chips. Poor quality and over priced. The only positive thing I can say is that it was a relatively clean establishment.

We found the Shakespeare a friendly place. The staff were very friendly too and attentive without being obtrusive. The food we ordered was very nice and excellent value for public grub.

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
