We dined at Angels with Bagpipes on the last night of our visit to Edinburgh, and were very happy. We started out meal with a nice scallop appetizer, I had the lemon sole, my wife had salmon, and we enjoyed an excellent Picpoul (?) white wine. We ended our meal with a panna cotta and coffee / tea. The restaurant... More

This was such a positive surprise! In the middle of the really touristic area (in a negative sense) there is a small patch of heaven. We came there on recommendation from a friend. Not knowing the menu we tried the taste menue with the wine "package ". Superexccelentfantastic. Crab was a bit bland. Try the salmon instead. All the rest... More

Went with this restaurant after reading some good reviews. It was midweek so managed to get a table. The welcome was very friendly and we had a nice intimate table for 2. The food was well presented and after selecting Lamb rump for main we both thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the evening. Service was efficient and would recommend a... More

Thoroughly enjoyed a meal here with my girlfriend. I'd mentioned it was a celebratory dinner briefly on the phone and it led to us getting the full treatment. Staff were polite and attentive with the right amount of banter too. Venison was ace, wine was great and the whole meal was spot on. Will definitely come again. Thoroughly recommend.

Beef tartare to die for and great wine. Made us welcome with the kids and happy to make smaller portions. Great spot just off the Royal Mile.

The food is fresh, the place is really nice and the service is outstanding. I really recommend the smoked salmon, the lemon sole and the beef tartare.

This restaurant was recommended by our hotel and we would definitely come back. The food has a nice local touch without being “too rustic”; all our choices were delicious. Although we initially were skeptical about Haggis or rabbit with blood pudding, we tried it and thought both were excellent. The wine list offers great choices and good value for money.... More

Let me start by saying we had very nice food at this restaurant last week. So this could have been a four or even five star review, were it not for the frankly greedy attitude to wine service in the evening. We opted for a half-bottle of wine with our dinner, expecting to move on to whisky afterwards. We were... More

My wife and I had a wonderful dinner at this mall, stylish restaurant. It was so good, we went back to Angels with Bagpipes our last night. It is right in the heart of Edinburg’s main tourist area, so we were pleasantly surprised at the beautiful space with wooden floors and neutral color make it quite simply, romantic and a... More

We stopped here for lunch because of good ratings but were a bit disappointed. Servers friendly and quick. Tried the Haggis. At least it comes as a small helping. If on a budget this isn't the place to go.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
