We went there as part of a Groupon deal, but will definitely book again. Great food and lovely staff. I had checked with feta and spinach in a red pepper sauce and my hubby had duck. We both had mussels to start. Fast service, can't wait to try again.

This restaurant is located at upper level of street, achieved by walking, near market area, at Old Town. Food was excellent, place a little bit small, so might be a good idea to reserve a table. For us they give 1,5 hours time, which was quite enough. Menu incl also fish meals etc. This small restaurant has also few outside... More

Fell upon this restaurant by chance on a lovely Sunday lunchtime in October. Sat outside (there was no-one inside) on a limited terraced area and enjoyed both the view and the food. Very reasonably priced.

Stumbled across this place by chance, but what a find! Staff ever so friendly. Good varied menu, try the haggis, it's good. Good value menu and comfortable quirky surroundings. Go sit on the terrace and watch the world go by with a baileys hot chocotae, very good!

Over the years me and the wife have visited Maxies, situated in the wonderful location of Edinburgh's old town. Always a friendly greeting from the busy staff. On this occasion i had prawn and wife had oysters for starters. Very well presented and even better to eat. Mains i had fish & chips special. Two good sized pieces of battered... More

I booked Maxie's for 10 people to dine on a Friday night at 7pm. We were greeted by friendly, helpful staff who were attentive throughout our visit. Although it was busy with a few large parties we were well looked after. The food was very good value and everyone enjoyed their meals. The menu was varied enough to cater for... More

Customers leaving recommended the food to us as we browsed the menu. Short wait while a table became free ( busy as the Fringe was in full swing). Good varied menu plus blackboard specials including haggis dishes ( when in Scotland etc.) . Shared starters, and a main plus drinks came to a reasonable £105. Quirky decor and a huge... More

We were running late to choose somewhere as we had to be somewhere later and it was busy in the town when we came upon Maxies and the menu appeared to have something for us all although the outside was not massively appealing but as we were short of time we decided to go in. We were welcomed by friendly... More

We enjoyed a brisk late lunch outdoors on the patio of Maxie's, which is at the back and faces Victoria Street. I had a nice half size haggis tower with neeps and tatties, and my friend had the full size version. I also had a duck salad. I could probably have done without the dick salad, but the haggis was... Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
