I booked Maxie's for 10 people to dine on a Friday night at 7pm. We were greeted by friendly, helpful staff who were attentive throughout our visit. Although it was busy with a few large parties we were well looked after. The food was very good value and everyone enjoyed their meals. The menu was varied enough to cater for... More

Customers leaving recommended the food to us as we browsed the menu. Short wait while a table became free ( busy as the Fringe was in full swing). Good varied menu plus blackboard specials including haggis dishes ( when in Scotland etc.) . Shared starters, and a main plus drinks came to a reasonable £105. Quirky decor and a huge... More

We were running late to choose somewhere as we had to be somewhere later and it was busy in the town when we came upon Maxies and the menu appeared to have something for us all although the outside was not massively appealing but as we were short of time we decided to go in. We were welcomed by friendly... More

We enjoyed a brisk late lunch outdoors on the patio of Maxie's, which is at the back and faces Victoria Street. I had a nice half size haggis tower with neeps and tatties, and my friend had the full size version. I also had a duck salad. I could probably have done without the dick salad, but the haggis was... As much as we enjoined the sea food we were shocked with the poor service. Food was really good, prepared well by the kitchen chef. We have ordered starter and a main course and we asked if all can be served together. Both came separately with a huge time gap between the servings. Tables around us were left unclean with... More

Wandering around looking for a restaurant before going to the Tattoo and found this wonderful restaurant. Very busy outside on the terrace so dined in and was not disappointed. Great atmosphere really pleasant and helpful staff and a superb meal washed down with a great bottle of wine. Had the seafood linguine which I would recommend, service was first class.

Found this gem whilst wandering around Edinburgh on a trip to see the Tattoo. We only sampled the fish and chips, it was delicious the haddock was so fresh and beautifully cooked. We spoke to a couple sitting next to us who were having starters and mains and they said their steaks were amazing. It seems this is a great... More

Just popped in for a late lunch. The view from the comfortable terrace at the back is fabulous. Food really good value for the location right near the castle and Claire, the waitress, was lovely

General speaking, my friend and I had a good dinner here. We ordered two salads and a platter of seafood, which is really good for two ppl to share. The greens are fresh. The whole night highlight is the seafood: super fresh seafood with prawns, mussels, oysters, and scallops. Very tasty and the portion is really decent :)) we ordered... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
