First trip to to Scotland, first time to Edinburgh. This was the third of three Christmas teas I organized for my daughter and I in December, 2016. First tea was in London, second at The Dome, and the third, at The Balmoral. What set this apart from others? From the moment we entered the Tea Room, I was taken in by... More

We were served the most delicious Champagne followed by a tasty selection of soup, haggis balls, quiche, sandwiches, scones and cakes with a superb choice of teas and coffees. Finishing with mango sorbet. At the same time we were entertained by a live harpist. Thomas our waiter was excellent and the staff ensured everything was just right for us. We... More

Booked Palm Court at the Balmoral for my mum's 80th birthday for Afternoon Tea on the recommendation of a friend who said it was well worth sampling. We were met on arrival by a welcoming staff member who showed us to our table and explained how we should choose our drinks from the menu and how the afternoon tea was... More

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Palm Court. The girls that served us were great. Food gorgeous, nice to have it served in mini courses rather than all at once. I love scones so I was in heaven... one of each, plain and fruit...yum!! Tiny ice creams and gifts a lovely touch. Lovely atmosphere too. You do get what you pay... More

I would highly recommend The Palm Court for a truly indulgent afternoon treat. The beautiful surroundings and warming tones from the harpist was a great retreat from the blustery chilly outside. From the wonderful warming Pumpkin soup, amuse bouche to the pastries everything was superb, and it is always a lovely treat to be able to take home a goody... More

As a venue for that little touch of class at a reasonable cost, this ticks the boxes as a lovely venue for afternoon tea in Edinburgh. The attention to detail was most welcome, the surroundings very pleasing and of course the tea and fancies rather moreish. A definite must for any visitor to the Scottish capital. Book ahead to reserve... More

Staying in Princes Street and Gardens

Neighbourhood Profile
Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.
