We have dined at this venue since it’s opening in Edinburgh and having sampled at least 8 of its menus. We have never had a single bad word to say about it - - until now!!
On this particular visit the first thing we noticed was that the front of house staff (who always used to be exceptional) had completely changed. The new team seemed to be rather disinterested and not particularly attentive. A few of the main courses were served only lukewarm, the starter ‘snacks’ were extremely poor value and overall the menu lacked the innovation that Six by Nico has become renowned for.
The fear we genuinely have is that in its drive to open more restaurants around the UK it is sacrificing focus, quality and customer service at its existing establishments.

This was my 3rd visit to Six by Nico. My wonderful partner secured a last minute table for our anniversary, well saved darling! I was looking forward to the menu, Mad Hatters Tea party. The food was imaginative, surprising, tasty and good value, and an edible menu each, :-) we really enjoyed the experience, and the prosecco was delicious. We did find that the service was a tad rushed this time, probably due to the fact that the restaurant is so popular. Unusual dining at not a bad price, if you haven't been, book a table, something different, a chance to try food that you probably wouldn't try elsewhere.

Like a soundtrack to a film, service in a restaurant won’t make it on its own but it can ruin a good one if it’s bad or make a great one even better. In the case of Six By Nico the service we received took what was already really good to a whole other level. The food was outstanding. We went for the wine pairing which for each course really added to the dish and there were some really good wines in there. The cameras over the service area added a really interesting talking point but the thing, or person who really added to our experience was Emily and I hope this feedback gets back to her. She knew the dishes and the wine being informative about both. She was attentive, asking every time if we were ready for our next course and taking plates and glasses at just the right time so we never felt rushed. Thanks go to the kitchen staff too who produced some amazing food, and the option was there to swap out dishes from the alternative (vegetarian etc) menus if you wanted......this is something that is not done at several other high end restaurants I’ve eaten in, all of which were much, much more expensive. This really is one of those places that provides an experience that is really, really special at a price that doesn’t mean we won’t be back.

This was our third visit and we left as impressed as ever. Menu changes regularly and on this occasion was as inventive, interesting and delicious as ever. Service was spot on and at £29 a head for the menu is great value. Warning: you have to book even on days you think may be quiet as this place is normally full to the gunwales.

I first visited in Feb this year and was hooked. I made further bookings for April, May, July and Sept to celebrate some birthdays and to make sure we got the different menu's each time they changed, however sadly those bookings were all cancelled due to Covid.
We had two of their 'Home by Nico' boxes during lockdown, one to celebrate a birthday, and were delighted with the ingenuity, value for money and quality.
We were fortunate enough to be able to rebook my birthday meal for July and visited on 24 July. I was quite apprehensive about what measures they had place re seating as i've been quite cautious during lockdown and this was to be my first meal out.
A call to Ailsa at the restaurant really helped put me at ease, and on the night she'd put us in a great location and I was able to forget what is going on with the world for a few ours, relax, and really enjoy 'The Chippie'.
Great concept, great quality food, great value for money and great service = an excellent experience.

This was our first trip to Six by Nico after hearing friends and colleagues rave about it for some time. The concept is fantastic; we had the Sicilian taster menu - every course was exciting and delicious, and came together to form a wonderful meal. Service was attentive and friendly, and the cost of the 6 courses for the quality of the food is quite mind-boggling.
One of the nicest meals I've had in the UK in a long, long time. Can't wait to go back already.

We've visited Six By Nico many times, and always thoroughly enjoyed the creative themed menus, inventive drinks and dishes, and great service (all for a super value price).
In October we visited for the first time during the pandemic. Despite being a small restaurant, it felt reassuringly safely managed - appropriate spacing, lots of hand sanitiser etc.
Our server Francesca was phenomenal. She was incredibly knowledgeable about the dishes and wines, friendly, helpful, efficient and organised. We felt extremely well looked after and all our party wanted to specifically feed this back as we felt she was exceptionally good at what she does and she is a real asset to the Six By Nico family.

Went to six by nico just a few hours after the first minister announced that in just over 48 hours restaurants would close for 2 weeks. The service we had was not affected at all by this, although I am sure the staff were all concerned about what was in store in the weeks/months ahead. We were using vouchers from Christmas and were looking forward to the meal. The food was ok - probably around what we had paid for- highlights for me were the foccacia bread which we added on, and the fish course was tasty too. The matching wines enhanced the meal and the occasion. We were advised when we booked we had the table for 2 hours, and went a little bit over but were still allowed extra time for coffee. The service was very good, and all the staff were very attentive.
I hope the staff are all able to return to work soon, although I'm not sure i will be in any desperate rush to go back.

Since we haven't been able to dine out and review any restaurants over the last month, we found ourselves looking for something a little different to satisfy our foodie cravings! Luckily for us, we discovered the newly launched Six by Nico Masterclasses!
Each week a selection of recipes are added to the Six by Nico website where you'll be able to choose two and build your own box containing two portions of each. The boxes will contain all the necessary ingredients to create both dishes, a recipe card which includes a private website link to Nico's masterclass video, and a complimentary half bottle of wine to accompany each dish.
We decided to go for the Roasted Cod and Chermoula Chicken. At first glance, £60 for a box may seem like a little bit of a stretch, but you soon realise how much value for money it is, as not only are you able to create 4 restaurant standard dishes, but you gain valuable cooking skills and techniques from one of the UK's top chefs (also, if you're like us, you'll still have a few spare ingredients left to make similar dishes later in the week!).
Although the instructional video does give you a great tutorial, for less experienced chefs like us, the recipe card gives you more context to the techniques involved in creating the perfect culinary masterpiece. To make sure you get the most out of this experience, we would highly recommend watching the full masterclass video and reading the recipe card in full before getting started!
We look forward to trying this again, both dishes were delicious.

Having visited the Glasgow restaurant before and having had an exceptionally lovely experience their - personable service, great chat and delicious food - we made a point of ensuring we could visit while in Edinburgh.
Our original dinner booking was cancelled a couple of days before due to there not being enough time for the full ‘experience’ which was frustrating as the option to book at a certain time should just be removed. Anyway, we ended up going at 4pm for a late lunch.
On arrival, the host was friendly and showed us to our table but every interaction with the staff after that felt very routine, lacklustre and frankly was disappointing. There service was by no means bad, just not genuine. We felt simply like bums on seats, another ‘turnover’. Considering this was a belated birthday meal for me, it was so disappointing. We weren’t once asked what brought us in or what we had planned for the rest of the day, even the course descriptions were brief with simply pointing out what the menu told us - we’d hoped for some excitement but sadly no.
In terms of atmosphere, we were sat right next to the bar and constantly had all servers running back and forth right behind us. I mean right behind us, on multiple occasions, my partner actually had to move forward to avoid being bumped into by them. Not great at anytime and especially not during covid.
The food itself was as expected and very tasty but as mentioned before, had very little information given on each course. I actually knew more about what we were eating by eavesdropping on tables around us. Maybe as the circus menu was extended, staff have grown careless and bored but I’m just guessing.
Unfortunately we were left feeling so cold and disappointed by the service and atmosphere that we would not visit this restaurant again. Our Glasgow visit was a proper experience and one that we have talked about for the last few years with great fondness but our visit to Edinburgh left us feeling like just another number and frankly for £80 for lunch/early dinner, it was not up to par.

Had a fantastic chippie meal, the staff were very knowledgeable about every course, the tastes were very individual and inventive. The extra snack which you pay for separately from the taster menu was great, shellfish butter with sourdough bread and 2 filo fish and moose wraps topped with caviar. Would definitely recommend and you need to book as they are constantly busy as it’s not a big resturant. My only downside to the meal was a couple of the courses went cold fast despite the plates being warm, perhaps the kitchen could heat the plates a bit more.

We came here just pre Xmas for lunch.
A very popular restaurant, we booked about a couple of weeks in advance.
The tasting menu regularly changes its theme and we throughly enjoyed The Mad Hatters Tea Party Menu.
The staff were very knowledgeable about both the food and wines.
We all opted for the paired wine suggestions, which were all perfect with the food and it gave an opportunity to try wines that were a bit different.
The star in my opinion was the consommé soup, served in a little glass cup along with a savoury biscuit. Generally, I am not a consommé fan, but this was truly delicious, and the nicest one I have ever had.
It is a very busy, popular restaurant & on booking it is made clear you have a 2 hr slot.
We did feel somewhat rushed with wines appearing before the previous ones were finished and the food also appeared too quickly for us. We did ask the waitress to slow the pace down to allow us to enjoy our experience better.
Perhaps an extra half hour would be nice?
The regularly changing menu is a good idea, and we would return again.

I took the family here for my daughter's 18th birthday meal and the whole family were delighted.
The restaurant has the perfect balance of rosette standard food, fantastically balanced with informal dining, we really felt comfortable and the waiters done an excellent job of describing the food/wines we were given.
On finding out it was for my daughter's 18th birthday we were given a gratis glass of bubbly for the whole table, this is the kind of touch that separates the great from the good.
Bravo!!

Was expecting a lot of my visit due to previous reviews but have to say we were seriously underwhelmed with the Shanghai menu. I realise this is not a Michelin star-type taster menu as it would cost a lot more. However, I think they've got the balance wrong. Firstly, the portions for each course (and I use that word loosely) are TINY. A couple of mouthfuls and they're gone. The first three courses tasted much the same and were lukewarm (we assumed they were meant to be like this!) The waitresses did explain all the ingredients but because the portions are so tiny, you just can't taste them! The only bit I really liked was the cod which was actually hot. The dessert was boring and tasted most of a type of tea. We love the idea of a taster menu and I've tasted a lot better. So why don't you charge more with bigger portions so people can actually taste the ingredients? Sadly, we won't be back.

My partner and I fell in love with Nico's back in November 2018 and haven't missed a menu since. My family were up visiting for Christmas and made sense to book a table for the 6 of us at my favourite restaurant on 23rd December at 1915. Everytime we have been the staff have been super friendly and attentive, bar this occasion. On entering the restaurant we waited for someone to greet us and show us to our table. We were approached by a sour faced lady who just stared at us, no hello or smile. She then made a face as if to emphasise the fact she was waiting on us to say what we were there for. My brother apologised and said we had a booking, she then moodily showed us to our table. It was really embarrassing after hammering on to my parents about what a great restaurant it is. She made us feel very unwelcome and as if us being there was inconvenient. The mad hatters menu was excellent, we loved the food as always and so did the rest of the family. My partner and I will return again because we love the place, I will think twice about recommending to others though. It put a damper on our experience.

New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
