We had a lovely meal here, one of the major things that let it down was the manager he was quite rude and wasn't very welcoming at all. The rest of the staff were helpful enough although we did have to ask for the bill a few times! Nice but we won't be recommending it

What a disappointment! Loved the look and feel of the restaurant when we arrived. But it quickly went downhill with the poor, even rude customer service from our server. Food was average at best. However, it was the poor service that really spoiled our evening.

The restaurant was really busy for a Wednesday night. Tables also very close so you do feel squeezed in. Service pretty good. Had some mash up starter of black pudding, fish that was excellent. Flat iron steak was very average for main course. My colleague asked for mustard and it arrived in a MacDonald style "squeeze your own". I thought... More

Heard this place was quite famous, so went to try their food with friends. We didn't book a table but the manager gave us a table till 8pm so we had just more than 1 hour to eat. It was fine for me but.... the service from the manager and other staff were awful. The bold head manager just threw... More

We arrived Saturday afternoon having not booked, it was very busy but luckily they managed to squeeze us in. Not quite sure what to expect, surroundings very basic and looking in need of some attention. We ordered bread for the table and our dishes. The bread arrived, homemade and still warm, it was delicious! We then had the sausage and... More

After calling about 5.30 and asking for a table for 6pm the staff were very accommodating and managed to squeeze me in. The service was promp and the food was also very good. Quite quirky but minimalistic inside.

The interior of the restaurant is quite unique, with dog pictures and statutes everywhere. The restaurant is located on the first floor of an apartment building and there are two separate rooms that look like you are inside an apartment. It has a very cosy but at the same time hip feeling to it. We tried the barley risotto and... More

Popped into The Dogs for lunch. The dining area was crowded but we were seated immediately. I had the oxtail pie and my husband had the fish and chips. Both were delicious and freshly prepared. The service was a bit gruff, but not offensive.

This is definitely one of my favourite restaurants in the city. The location is great and the food is very tasty and very reasonably priced. I have been here quiet a few times and will certainly be back, however my only criticism is that on one occasion, there was on waiter who was very pushy on making us leave our... More

Had lunch at the end of our Edinburgh weekend. We were staying close by and I was intrigued by the name. I thought the menu looked great. Lunch menu was different but delivered great taste at great value. Feeling jaded after a heavy weekend, I had the bulgur wheat, roast pepper, chickpea and dill salad. It was really refreshing and... Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
