Despite the mixed reviewed I decided to give this a go when my sister was up visiting from London but was disappointed with the quality of the food. It felt as though they cut corners to cost save and it certainty wasn't cheap at £44 each for a starter, main and drink each! The salmon starter was advertised a being... More

I highly doubt you will taste more delicious food in the whole of Edinburgh. Every bite there is a symphony of taste reverberating around my pallet, and the staff make you feel so welcome and really know what they are talking about.

First of all this is was a meal purchased from a Groupon deal given to us as a present. Never been hear before but reviews seemed good. We booked for 6pm as that was the only time available that day, however on arrival both us and another couple were stood outside as the doors were locked for a good 5... More

I'm loath to write this bad review as I had a good evening because of the people I was with. However, in the interests of being helpful, here it is. First of all, the restaurant layout is odd. It's in the basement and all diners had to pass a table of 8 who were essentially sitting in a corridor, then... More

As it was our Wedding Anniversary, we wanted to find somewhere special to eat and we were not disappointed. This charming restaurant is hidden away underground in the heart of Edinburgh. An intimate setting is provided which is ideal for a special event and the staff are most welcoming and attentive. Both my husband and I had the lamb shanks... More

Really lovely evening. Downstairs with a great intimate atmosphere. Lovely menu. We both had the pheasant breast which was delicious. My husband had the rhubarb desert and I had the raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake - both were delightful. The waiter Nassos from Athens was very attentive and the owner was very welcoming and humorous. A really great recommendation from... More

Went over for an official dinner. It was downstairs in a cosy room. Service was outstanding. The food on the other hand was excellent. We had such a lovely evening. Just perfectly perfect! I reported a dairy allergy. Unfortunately the set menu for the dinner had dairy in all the starters. The waiter soon came back to offer a choice... More

The first mistake was taking the advice of the Concierge at the Waldorf to go here. The clientele were all from our hotel - he must be on commission The restaurant is down in the basement of an old building with a number of pokey rooms. The food id from another era - pate, smoked salmon, steaks, creme brulee etc -... More

My wife and I got a Xmas gift of a groupon voucher for a 3 course meal at Stac Polly restaurant in Dublin Street, Edinburgh. I checked the menu in advance and liked what I saw. The voucher cost £40 but it was actually worth almost £90 in food. The entrance with the cocktail/gin bar did not grab us. The... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
