Entry into the upstairs dining chambers is unsafe. My girlfriend slipped over onto her back and was shaken and hurt. Up the stairs, the doorway to our dining room was immediately on the left. There is a small drop in level into the dining room which suffers from a substantial gradient and waxy old flooring. PLEASE, MANAGEMENT: GLUE DOWN A... More

A party of 13 went for an early Christmas Dinner on a Saturday night. The restaurant is nice and cosy with a bit of character. One of the better venues in Salisbury. In arranging the meal, the staff were very helpful in allowing us to have the Xmas Menu before it was actually due to be started. They also accepted... More

I had ordered the pulled haunch of venison burger with mixed salad. Not sure what the waiter brought to the table but on tasting it I could not eat it due to the fact that it was so wet and resembled something which looked like it had been regurgitated! I have a potato allergy and requested extra salad instead of... More

A lovely place to eat, warm fire on a cold night, the staff were attentive and food mouthwatering. If you love good food this is a must.

We were seated on the top floor right by a lovely log fire. Tables well spaced, cosy room and ambience perfect for a quiet family lunch and private discussion. Lunch menu was varied. Party of three, all ordered different meals. All were very good, well cooked and very tasty. Good sized portions. Waiter (Russian) was excellent, good explanations, extra items... More

Came here with my family and the grandparents while in the area for a brief break. The main selling point of this place is the history - this is a proper old fashioned pub with sloping floors, loads of original features, and it's smack bang in the middle of the city. If you like that kind of 'ambiance', I heartily... More

Great looking pub, with a wonderful bar area and open fire, terrific beers !! Restaurant is upstairs and lacks the ambience of the downstairs, too bright, candles on the table but not lit. Bread and oil tasty, pigs cheek starter very good, salmon terrine not great. Sausage and mash, sausage overdone small amount of mash. Venison casserole, overcooked, dumpling was tiny and tasted... I put off going to the Haunch of Venison for a couple of years now, never really considering it when wanting to go out for food. Boy was I wrong. Visited on a Friday evening, the restaurant was not busy at all, maybe it was slightly earlier than their usual guests. The service was very polite and attentive. The food... More

This pub is so unique. The oldest pub in Salisbury. The most haunted pub in Salisbury (rumoured). They offer catch of the day fish in the restaurant upstairs while downstairs is a beautifully old and weathered wooden bar across several levels. And of course there is the infamous severed hand in the wall

We went there for lunch. The architecture of the building is very good. Our lunch was good - the parsnip soup starter didn't have much taste but this was made up by the cod main which had an excellent combination of flavours which had been clearly well thought through. Definitely recommend as a place to visit in Salisbury.

One of the city's most historic pub, and listed on CAMRA's National Inventory as one of the most historic interiors in the UK, The Haunch is packed with history, reputedly haunted by the ghost of the cheating card player, whose mummified hand is displayed in the upper 'House of Lords' Bar, with the snug 'Horsebox' allegedly the meeting place of Churchill and Eisenhower whilst planning the D-Day landings! With a spacious first floor restaurant, and a recent ownership change, The Merchant's House dining room on the first floor (entrance through pub) features a contemporary British menu specializing in local ingredients which include our famous venison casserole, superb selection of local meats and fish. Complemented with a specialist whiskey list, fine wine list and local hand - pulled real ales, as well as very friendly service, The Haunch is a definite 'must see' on your visit to Salisbury!
