We were so impressed with the food at Purnima. Biryani can often be greasy but here it was perfect. We had a mixture of meat and vegetable dishes including the spinach on the special board. All were beautifully flavoured and perfectly balanced with spices. We were lucky to be visiting during Rishi Sunak’s eat out to help out campaign so the bill was embarrassingly small. We would happily have paid full price. Do go if you’re in the area. The staff and service were both excellent too.

Visited this restaurant with a party of 22. Good greeting at door and escorted to our table. Decor is quite chic and relaxing, table setting very nicely done. Drinks orders taken and delivered quite quickly considering size of our party. The usual tray of chutney and dips with chapati was served. We had booked for 7.45 and by 8.30 our main courses were ordered. Sadly main courses were not delivered until 10.15 and with a few errors although they did provide trays of indian nibbles in between. Just think our party along with other customers was just a little too much for kitchen to cope with. When food did arrive it was voted as very good by everyone. Service was friendly and mainly efficient. I would certainly go again but not with such a large group.

My friend and I ate at this lovely little restaurant very recently. As always, the food and service was excellent. Alim was attentive without being intrusive and Roly the chef was happy to recommend food that we had not tried before. We were not disappointed.
The atmosphere in the restaurant is lovely and it was a great way to spend a Friday evening.
Don't hesitate in trying this restaurant, I would highly recommend.

We ordered takeaway from Purnima and we were over charged on a number of dishes based on prices on their website and menu we had. In one case a dish had a difference of ÂŁ1.80. When challenged they did not offer to refund the difference and argued the menu was wrong - this was on their website so food should be sold at prices advertised. No note on website either to say they some meals may have gone up in price and they are awaiting a menu update. This is really not good and I question how many people they have over charged. I would imagine this is unlawful.
Note: once raised they removed menu off site and cut the image showing their menu on their site.

We recently visited Purnima as a family of 4. I will start with positive points first. Service staff were really friendly. Manager of the restaurant (could be owner also) was a polite and energetic person who showed utmost care to the customer with a friendly smile all the time. So, all the staff were fantastic. Secondly, the ambience was also very good, it was not outdated but more matched to the type of food served. So, we loved it.
All the prices in the menu was striked off and it threw us a bit out of balance as they mentioned that the new prices are getting outdated. This could be because, they may be taking over the restaurant from someone else and probably not ready with new prices for the dishes. But we would prefer to know exactly how much we are spending for a dish that we want to eat transparently.
Lets come to the food part. Some of the things that we experienced. When we sat down and starters were about to be served, my daughter was given a plate which was not washed properly and had food stains. When we pointed it out , they took care of it immediately. The waiting time for the starters itself was a bit too high, we felt, as we waited more than 35 minutes for the starters to arrive. Quality of the starters in respect to the taste of the food, was average at best. Portions were not big, but we are ok with that, however the taste was not up to the mark.
Main course - Naan bread were fresh as was very well done. Both veg and non veg main courses were bit bland and lacked proper seasoning. Again, we waited a long time between starters and main course. As we are big time foodies, and we like to try out new restaurants and we have reasonably a good pallet and so along with service ambience and everything, taste of food is very very important for us and i think thats where Purnima needs to put a bit more effort and make delicious dishes. Sorry, could not justify myself to go more than 2 stars as we expected more for the price (which is not too much but slightly) higher.

We arrived and informed the staff of our booking. The man couldn’t seem to see it and just sort of gestured for us to sit down whilst they went and rummaged about. We weren’t told if we had a table or not. 15 minutes later we were waved at and a table pointed to. 15 minutes later I asked for drinks. 15 minutes later I asked if we could order food . 1 hour and a quarter later hot starters minus the popodums that we had asked for arrived. Some time after this we got mains (no idea how long, but longer than it should have been, It was close to my bed time, not my starting to eat a curry time)
No one offered an apology for delays or asked if we wanted drinks at any point. The restaurant had empty tables, it shouldn’t have been as bad as it was, but even if it was short staffed, just an apology, a jug of water and some popodums would have kept us happy and I’d be talking about the food instead of how tired l, hungry and fed up we were.
We won’t go back, which is a shame as we actually really enjoyed the mains. The veg sagwalla in particular was delicious, really fresh veg including courgette and broccoli that still had just enough bite.

As a fellow chef and foodie..I would be very reluctant to eat from here again
The menu consisted of King Prawn Biryani, Peshawar Naan and poppadoms.
The Biryani was pretty tasteless as far as this dish offering revealed...with seven King prawns. The rice was pretty greasy and as you can see the Naan was decimated...
This dish is at least 25% more expensive than other Asian takeaways for no particular reason.
The following day I experienced stomach discomforts...

Lovely place with an amazing atmosphere,
The food was delicious. We rediscovered the flavours of the authentic Indian cuisine made with fresh and quality products, we loved the wine too. The staff were fantastic with us and we had a great welcoming, we will come back again for sure!

We have visited Purnima’s on a few occasions and have regular takeaways. The food is always fresh and hot and tastes amazing. We tried numerous restaurants around Selly Oak and Harborne but nothing is as good as Purnima’s. The staff are really friendly and make you feel so comfortable. Make sure to try the sticky lamb chops and the Modhu Minty Lamb Aloo.
If you can’t see what you like on the menu just speak to Roly and if he can he will make it for you, nothing is too much trouble.

This restaurant never fails to disappoint. I went yesterday with my partner and had the best food we've eaten for months.
We started with fish pakoras and the mixed chicken trio, both were perfectly cooked, tender and bursting with flavour.
Mains were lamb karahi and the railway lamb, with the usual pilau rice and garlic & coriander naan. The balance and depth of flavours were exceptional, which really sets this place apart from the local competition (which is strong and plentiful), as does the service; we were served by a guy called Roly (the owner i think) who is a character to say the least! His knowledge of the food, wine and industry is amazing and has got many stories to tell which are hilarious! I'd give the food 9.5 out of 10 but even if it was lower, the friendly, professional and welcoming service, make Purnima a must place to visit. It's so much more than 'popping out for a curry'.
As good as it gets.
That's high praise from a curry addict from Birmingham, the curry capital.

The owner and his staff are beyond welcoming and efficient. My friends and I were treated like royalty and enjoyed an excellent meal once again.
We had the Butter Chicken, Lamb Korai and Railway lamb washed down with a very nice Las Pampas Malbec.

We had a delivery from Purnima 6th November 2020, we have had many takeaways in the past which have been great, unfortunately our last takeaway was so very salty we could not finish our meal. Please please rectify this as we have enjoyed so much in the past.
Thank you

Fantastic service and fantastic food. This is a great restaurant; highly recommend the mixed Tandoori starter and the salmon and king prawn dishes on the chef’s recommendations. Would not be out of place in the city centre; so lucky to have this on the doorstep in Bearwood.

We were talking to someone we met on a walk in Edgbaston and said how disappointed we were with Indian restaurants in Birmingham, even the famous and expensive ones. We had not been to one for a while due to this. They recommended Purnima on Bearwood High street so we went last night.
We were firstly amazed by the standard of the interior which is very high. The staff were all lovely and the owner was very professional yet friendly too. The menu size is just right so you know it is not all going to come out of the freezer. There is a good line list too and some unusual beers. The value for money here is extremely good.
The food was exceptional. We had a fish mixed starter and a meat one to share which were wonderful then an excellent curry. It is obviously a place where people go back to regularly as everyone was friendly and the staff new them.
This is sounding like one of the glowing reviews you can get on this site now and very suspiciously the reviewer only has 1 review posted, but you can see I do leave poor reviews too if honestly needed.
Do go and see for yourself, we had a great evening.

We held my birthday celebration at Purnima on Saturday 11th December, which we had been planning with Alim and Nikki for a few weeks.
The whole evening could not have been a better experience. The food was exceptional (as it always is), the service and ambience created by Alim, Nikki and all of the staff was superb and very professional. All of our guests had a wonderful, relaxing and enjoyable evening.
Purnima is gem of a restaurant that surpasses expectations every time we visit and is highly recommended.
Thanks guys for helping to create a very memorable birthday celebration. 🎉
See you again soon. đź‘Ť
